I wanted to post this in the 'general discussion' section, but as it seems to be down indefinitely...
About 3 months ago I came to China on a visa hop. Recently, for personal reasons, I've decided to stay. Though I had little intention of studying Mandarin, it has become my top priority, one I am happily taking on now.
My intention is to simply use this thread as a record of my study plan, goals and progress. Occasionally I'll share resources that I've put together (vocab lists, study pages, anki decks, etc.) in the hope that they may be useful to others. All suggestions and criticism are welcome, so long as they are on topic.
My study plan and goals:
1. Finish RSH1 deck
-Change keywords to eliminate conflicts with RTK1/3 and RSH2 [done]
-Edit stories borrowed from RTK and RTH; make new stories [8/7]
-Memorize new hanzi and simplifications using custom webpage and whiteboard [8/9]
-Catch up on keyword>hanzi reviews in Anki [8/12]
Resources:
Custom review web page
RevTH to RevSH workaround
2. Add pinyin to RSH1 stories by any means that work. [8/15]
Possibilities include:
Custom system that breaks pinyin into initial, final and tone
System that breaks down pinyin into Initial+final and tone
Grouping hanzi by reading
Sound radicals
Resources:
Custom mnemonics system
Other systems found online
3. Memorize RSH1 pinyin (1st reading of each character) [9/5]
Drill characters using custom page and whiteboard
Generate Hanzi>Pinyin cards in RSH1 deck and begin reviews
Resources:
Custom review web page
4. Memorize first 2000 words from drama frequency list (87%) using Iversen lists of 5 words (@200/day) [9/19]
Resources:

Anki Deck - Finished! Uploading soon. (Top 10,000 words)
^EDIT: Decks can't be shared on ankiweb as the owner has blocked uploads. I'll look for an alternative way to share the deck.
See this thread for Hanzi breakdown of this list: http://forum.reviewingthehanzi.com/viewt...pid=179838
5. Read through level 1 of Chinese Breeze graded reader series [9/30]
1st 2 passes - silent shadowing using slow recording
3rd pass - read to a native speaker (probably just a few pages)
4th pass - shadow slow recording
Resources:
Chinese Breeze series http://www.amazon.com/Chengzhi-Chu/e/B00...r_dp_pel_2
(Holiday) <-limited anki reviews only
6. Memorize next 4788 words from drama frequency list (95%) using Iversen lists of 5 words (@200/day) [11/4]
7. Lots o' Television (dramas/news/movies/singing shows) [maybe shadow acting?]
Things under consideration:
Breeze Levels 2 & 3
RSH 2 (maybe just add hanzi to RSH 1 deck as I encounter them in my vocab studies)
Vocab -10,000
Karaoke
Basically, I think that television will be one of my most valuable resources for self-studying as EVERYTHING is subtitled word-for-word in Mandarin here. I'm already able to pick out many words when I follow along with subtitles. That's why I think I'll get best results if I nail down hanzi quickly, then proceed with a frequency list based on television.
