Radical in 直

#1
I'm quite confused what are the components that make 直 or 置 or 具. It seems to be an 'eye' with one extra horizontal line. What's up with it? Any clarification or ideas would be very appreciated.

Hello AnnoJourney,

According to Heisig, it represents an eye that lays on the floor. So you start by a mouth, then you put 3 horizontal lines *inside* the mouth then you close the mouth with one larger horizontal line at the bottom that closes the shape.
The first one, (if my memory is correct) should be "straight" and the last one should be "tools".

If you are looking for the etymology, I won't be of any help, sorry.

Ok thank you! That's what I was wondering. . . maybe I'll imagine it as an eye that has been smished on the floor . . . because that's what's happens to eyes lying on the floor.
