Chinese Resources (discussion)

#1
Would you like to have a "useful resources for Chinese" sticky like the one we have for Japanese? Or is this Kanji forum getting "TMC"? (Too Much Chinese~)

Personally I would love to see it...some materials are quite hard to find (or don't exist?)

(Plus...some people are learning Cantonese, etc as well (e.g. me Smile ) so that would also have its own resources that would be useful to some. )

I'm mainly asking because I'm not sure exactly what's planned for the upcoming RTH rollout. For which we appreciate the hard work that is going on!

What do you think?

It would be nice to have equivalents of the Japanese sticky threads for better organization:

* "Kanji lists, Joyo, non-joyo etc." equivalent for lists and spreadsheets.
* "List of Free Audiobooks" for Chinese.
* "Essential Resources" equivalent: everything else.

The Chinese forum will get its own domain eventually. I'll do this after RevTH is testable, since activity may increase then. For the time being there is "only" five pages of topics.

If it becomes a bother I could remove the Chinese forum topics from the RECENT TOPICS list, while Hanzi addicts could bookmark the Remembering Hanzi sub forum with little downside. So that shouldn't be a concern.

buonaparte: I'm going to split hairs again but... you've just dumped 30+ links with barely any comments, organization or reasons as to why these are worth checking out. You've got a very eclectic mix of links there and to be blunt: I don't like it. I think it's hardly any more useful than just hitting Google. That's not what I am looking for when I hit a Chinese Resources thread.

Now others forum regulars might disagree...

PS: delicious.com or similar bookmarking service I think would be better suited to share such lists. One advantage is people who also have an account there can save the links to their account. There are tags, some sites have votes and stars. I just don't see the connection between link lists and a forum. The forum is to share what we like and don't like, what we find useful. Meaning that we comment on them.

They are not random, they are organized. It will be obvious when you click them.

But I will remove them, of course. Sorry, I didn't mean to make any trouble.

I am sorry that these were removed and I missed them. If you still have them easily available, would you be willing to send them to me?

I'm on gmail as vorpal22.

I would love to see some resource sharing. To find websites where I could get Chinese texts with pinyin / English translations, or good Chinese apps I haven't heard of would be invaluable. I have a few apps myself that are absolutely essential in my Chinese studies and I would love to share these with people in the hopes that it helps them as much as they've helped me.

Well excuse me but that wasn't obvious at all. The first link comment was "Chinese"... and there were like two other brief comments in a list of 30+ links. Some of these links were to torrent sites, others to commercial sites like chineseclass. Others were blog. No formatting, no ordering, no comments.

Give me a break with the poor little victim attitude. I didn't ask you to delete the post. I said I didn't like it, and explained precisely why. You on the other hand think it's not worth your time to do a modicum of effort to format your posts, and comment on the things you share. Not all your posts were like this, but it's a general trend.

Besides, the OP asked about the likeliness of creating a "Chinese Resources" thread. I think the idea was to get some opinions, and then create a thread that I would sticky up. What you did is dump a bunch of links somewhat out of context, and it's not the first time you do this, which is what I find annoying.

Dear Administrator,

I don't consider myself a victim at all. I am really sorry. I do agree my posts may be annoying and so on, but I do mean well. I don't really want to upset anyone. Sometimes I don't describe the contents too well, I agree. It simply would take hell of a lot of time. Personally, I don't like long descriptions myself, what I prefer is a direct link to some content, and then I can check myself. I don't like long posts, either. If it is long, I don't read it.

TLDR: I'm not asking anybody to write a pragraph with each link. Just please break down long link lists with sections like "Audiobooks", "Ebooks", "Blogs", etc. Thanks.

Would it be helpful for some of us to start posting links so that we can gauge what types of stuff will be included in this thread and if they will be useful?

Yes, the idea of links is good, but we have to make sure that they are also useful to others. We don't always know what you found useful about them. While it's nice that you (buonaparte) are personalising your input somewhat, I can't generally work out what you mean when you do give titles to things! >< Smile In fact, to be completely honest (!) I can't see the connection between any of it!! (That's really what I think, though I am smiling when I say it)

It's hard to see something from the other person's point of view, but that is one of the great arts to be learned in this life of ours. Keep checking to see if an literate alien could understand what you say~then rephrase accordingly. (that's what I do)

>Anyway, thanks for the sticky! Let's keep it clean and brimming full of non-dead links!

Then the last useful thing I can think of would be a "What does this Mandarin word/phrase mean?" thread...
