good app-dictionary?

#1
Hey guys!
So I've just enrolled into a Mandarin Course in the University.
And I am looking for a good dictionary for my ipod-touch.

Mandarin-Mandarin is what I am looking for, since I am now using a Japanese-Mandarin free dictionary which can keep me going until I can go mono-lingual. ^^

I don't mind spending up to about 10 dollars for a great dictionary, but then I need your opinions. ^^

cheers!

It was free for a limited time so I snatched it. It's a simple Hanzi dictionary with Mandarin definitions and it has worked great thus far.

looks good!
this is mandarin-mandarin?
does it also integrate other languages? (just to be curious)
but from what I read you can only look up one character?? not words of 2? is that true?

I am using Pleco on my iPod touch. Great handwriting recognition (better than Apple's), great flashcard system (you can add each dictionary entry instantly into your flashcard database), and many dictionaries to choose from.

Very powerful software, check the tutorial and the forums for lots of details on how powerful this software is. I bought my iPod touch only for this software.

http://www.pleco.com/

They also offer a Chinese-Chinese dictionary http://www.pleco.com/guifan.html but the true beauty of this software is that you can switch between many dictionaries on the fly. You can also import your own, so I imported my Heisig list in such a way that whenever I tap on a single character it shows me my Heisig keyword.

In the tutorials you can preview the prefaces of all dictionaries the offer. The basic version and some dictionaries are free - so you can give it a try without risk. Some dictionaries are priced similar to their printed version - but who needs a printed dictionary if you have Pleco?

The author is extremely responsive in the forum.

All in all: I cannot image studying without this great software.

The app gives Mandarin definitions for every hanzi. Some hanzi have a "Detail" option which lists words containing the hanzi. The words have Mandarin definitions and simple English translations. Hope this helps Wink

For reading practice with an app that looks up the dictionary entries for you as you touch the words, try Hanzi Reader which works on the iPod, iPhone and iPad.
