Problems with kanji in Firefox tabs

#1
Hey, I've been trying to find posts about this on other websites (firefox forums, etc), and I'm not having any luck. I'm wondering:

Does anyone else that is using firefox notice that kanji in the tabs, the top blue page title, and the Windows task bar just show up as boxes?

Try loading up the card for a particular kanji, and you should be able to see the box where the kanji should be... I've enabled all the language settings that I'm aware of in Firefox, but still no love. Anyone?

I'm having this happen with ALL japanese websites, not just RevTK, btw.

It's because your Operative System isn't chinese/japanese/korean and thus has not installed Japanese Support by default. The installation takes a lot of space (200-300 Mb) and require you to have the windows CD. Search the web for "Japanese Support on Win XP" to find the instructions to enable it.

If you have an older OS, you can use NJStar to "hack" your windows to show japanese characters. It works well for english speakers, but it's not as good for other languages as it doesn't manage well special characters.

Hope this sparse info helped you.

I think it happens on sites where the character set is not explicitly set to Japanese, I've seen "html entities" not translated and showing up as squares.

You could try changing the code page on your system to Japanese. I thin I'm running a Japanese codepage now.. it shows the Yen symbol in place of backslashes. So the problem doesn't entirely go away, just shifts somewhere else Wink

To add on to DrJones' post..

I've seen this happen in XP when you've installed the Japanese fonts (through a font pack that can be downloaded from Microsoft's web page) but haven't installed support for East Asian languages. (Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages tab -> select Install files for East Asian languages) I don't think you have to install the Japanese input mode, but that certainly wouldn't hurt.

In addition to what scout said, you can also change the language settings to Japanese under the Regional Options tab and the Advanced tab. I don't know if it's connected to your problem, but sometimes when I want to use a program with Japanese text, it only works after I change the language settings. Well, actually I just leave it in Japanese unless I need to switch it back to English.

Hey, that makes a lot of sense! I'm mostly noticing this on my work computer, where I (just as you said) installed Japanese fonts, but didn't tell the system to recognize Jgo - and I don't think I can, since I don't have a windows cd kicking around, and whenever I try to change the regional language settings, Windows asks for the installation disk.

I'll try setting my OS to recognize Japanese at home, and if that works, then I'll know that it's just a problem with my work machine // the fact that I'm not able to install the right stuff on it.

Thanks a ton!
