Why did you choose that Kanji for your avatar?

#1
I just changed mine to the kanji that I missed the most in reviews, and thought I'd ask about why you all have those squiggles next to your name. some of them I've never even seen before and aren't in a dictionary... what do they mean?

edit: Well, I changed mine from 和 to 勧 but its not showing up. aw well.

I chose 葵 mostly because I liked the shape, and it's the plant in the Tokugawa family crest, which is a nice bonus for a history fan like me. I thought about the one in the Oda family crest, but it has two kanji (木瓜).

I chose this because it's a Japanese made kanji, as in they just threw the characters together. It means what you'd expect, it's not so common that it's boring, and it's symmetrical in most fonts. I like symmetrical characters, they look neat.

I chose this kanji because I thought it was pretty. Turns out the meaning is "learning, knowledge" which fits my personality quite well.

I chose this because it is definitely the most legitimate Kanji that exists

Ash→ash tree→トネリコ→秦皮(しんぴ、トネリコの別名)→「秦」
梣(とねりこ) would have been a fine choice as well but なんかゴツゴツしてて好きじゃない(笑)

Mine means "beginning". I think it's obvious why I've choosen that one.

My first avatar was 紫, I picked it because in Heisig's keywords that would be "irregular colour", that is the product of human craft and therefore something like a symbol of human culture.

I call myself Taishi→大志→志
And it also reflects my ambitions with Japanese.

Choose this kanji (and username) because it's been what I've been doing the most in Japanese.

My wife affectionately calls me "Maru". My hanko (判子) also bears the kanji, which has been a great conversation starter.

Because I find turkeys amusing, especially the one that appears in my RTK stories. And, being a rebel, I also liked the idea of using a primitive that's not really used as a kanji in its own right.

Because it's my very favourite, unforgettable, kanji story; "here we go round the mulberry tree... this is the way we wash our crotch, wash our crotch, wash our crotch".

Mine's from 戢鱗潜翼 (to bide ones time). I chose it to remind myself that 耳 is not connected to 戈.

I chose 鶏 because chicken are my favorite animals...

Mine means stubborn (something akin to persistent), which is what you have to be, to learn the kanji!!

So far this is the only kanji where my story was starred by anyone. Good reason enough Wink

鍋 is 'nabe,' the name for Japanese hot pot dishes. And, well, they're delicious.

Because any character that has many strokes gives that "Woah!" effect on any European who is used to his A,B and C. Smile

Because to learn kanji, one must give each character the proper deliberation.
