Switching to a better RTK anki deck after finishing RTK?

#1
Hello!

I finished RTK 1.5 years ago and have been using the same kanji deck for reviews since then. This deck is pretty low on features and have no readings at all, but recently I found a shared deck that is incredibly detailed and filled with readings. Sometimes when I forget a kanji I try to find and learn a word that uses it, and then I add it to the title in brackets with hiragana, but that is very time consuming.

Therefore I want to ask if any of you have experience with switching kanji deck after finishing RTK? I don't assume it's possible to directly transfer progress to another deck, so if some of you guys here are using this deck who have actually finished RTK, could you perhaps share it with me?

In addition, please don't post decks with stories taken from Reviewing the Kanji. I have never been contacted by the shameless author of this deck fyi.

To reformulate perhaps, does anybody know if it's possible to carry over progress from one deck to another that have identical front cards? All the cards in my normal kanji deck has only a single kanji, and so does the other, so it seems as if perhaps something would be possible here.

Anyone?

It is possible to update your deck with new fields from the deck you found, but it will take a lot of work.

First, be sure to export your old deck with scheduling information before attempting the update. This will be your backup in case something goes wrong. Then, start adding the fields you want to add to your old deck, leaving them empty. Do this by renaming your card model to something like RTK. Now you can edit its fields, adding the new ones you see on the shared deck page you linked to in your post. (I'm wondering if it would be possible to import the new deck, then open your deck and change its card model to the new one you just imported, mapping your front and back fields to the appropriate fields of the new model. If so, this would save you a lot of typing.)

Anyway, I think you'll also need to download and import the new deck to your profile if you haven't already, then export it as cards. Finally, you will need to open your old deck, and import the tsv file generated by the previous step, hoping it will use the kanji field of the old deck to match up the fields of the new deck. If you match up all of the fields properly (discarding any you don't want or forgot to add), you should have all of the new stuff added to your old deck, with the scheduling information of your old deck intact. This is kind of tricky, so if your anki-fu is not up to snuff, you may want to try something else.

Perhaps there is a plugin that would let you change status of the cards in the new deck to mature? That would be much easier. hth

Yes, if there was an option to make all cards mature then I could simply carry on from the new deck and discard the old one. That would be neat. I tried doing that the hard way by simply space-spamming every card in the new deck until they mature, but that's ridiculous.

Thanks for replying, by the way. I will try what you said. It's worth a shot.

It doesn't work. Or at least, I don't seem to be able to get it to. I exported the new deck as a txt. file (it didn't come out as tsv) and imported that to my current deck, but all that did was just add all those cards on top of the old ones. Honestly, it doesn't seem to be possible this way.

Did you change your old deck's card model to be the same as the new ones? This should have added many new (though empty) fields to your old deck. Now if you try to import the text file, does it ask if you would like to update the old deck?

The only cards it should add would be the 150 or so you may not have in your old deck.

Edit: Again, you will have to make sure that whatever fields have data in your old deck ('front' and 'back' perhaps) are now named the same as the new deck's equivalents ('keyword' and 'kanji' respectively). Maybe I'll try this myself today to see if I can give you more detailed instructions.

Ok, I just tried it with two decks and it will work. You will need to export the new deck as 'notes' NOT 'cards. You will also have to do some prep work beforehand, like I mentioned before. The main thing is to change all of your old deck's note types to the new type. This is done in the card browser. Be sure to map the fields correctly. And, be sure that the field names of your old deck match the corresponding new deck's fields EXACTLY (case matters).

Then, there is one more step I didn't mention. Before exporting the new deck, move whatever field matches your old deck's first field to the top of all fields. Anki will only update your old cards IF the first field match. So if your first field is now called 'kanji', move the new deck's 'kanji field to the top. You can do this by accessing the manage note types option from the menu.

Now, export the new deck as 'notes' (and probably without tags). Open your old deck and import this file, choosing the update option. Be sure that all of the options match (model etc.) and that all fields appear to be mapped properly.

If this works, you should see a message like "2042 notes updated, 158 added" or something like that.

Hmmm.. you say you've got it working? Then it must be possible. I am preparing dinner at the moment, but I will try it out afterwards and update you with the result. Thank you for your thorough guidance.

I don't see the option of changing note or model anywhere in the browser. Can you guide me?

Once you open the browser, click on a deck on the left column, then two buttons called "Fields" and "Cards" appear around the middle of your window. Click them and edit accordingly.

I tried again, but I couldn't get it to work. I went in and added the new fields that are in the new deck and altered all case differences and made sure everything matches. Then I changed the note type to the new deck. Then I exported the new deck with notes, imported that into the old deck and this is what it says:

"Importing complete.
0 notes added, 0 notes updated, 2200 notes unchanged."

What am I missing?

EDIT: Do you have Skype or something? It would probably be easier if I could show you my computer screen and then you could tell me what to do.

Are you using the update

I was in a hurry when typing my reply yesterday so perhaps I wasn't clear. Here are the steps:

1. Using the same profile as your old deck, import the new deck. This adds the new deck's note type to your profile.
2. Now open your old deck, open the browser, select all of the current deck's cards, then change their note type to the newly imported deck's type. I believe it is called 'Heisigs RTK 6th Best'. Map your fields to the appropriate fields in the new type (e.g. 'Front' -> 'meaning' and 'Back' -> 'kanji' )
3. Now go back to deck viewer you see when you first open your profile and from the top menu, select [Tools > Manage Note Types > select 'Heisigs RTK 6th Best > field > select 'kanji' > reposition > '1']
4. Export the new deck (choose ONLY the new deck), as notes and without tags checked.
5. DELETE the new deck from your profile.
6. Open your old deck
7. From the top menu select [File > Import> select the new text file you exported]
8. Change the options in the popup window (if necessary) to look like this:

Type: Heisigs RTK 6th Best
Deck: <your deck's name>
Fields separated by: Tab
Update existing notes when first field matches

Field 1 of file is: mapped to kanji

Actually, I solved it before seeing your last post and have been tingling with it all day along and testing it out. I was so thrilled when finally I was successful! I e-mailed Damien Elmes the same question and he linked to the article in the Anki guide which explains this, and that, combined with the instructions you gave, was almost enough to get it working, though I had to experiment a few times. Eventually I did all the steps necessary missing that you just wrote in your latest post.

I basically started over by importing my old backup deck. Then I took a screenshot of the fields of the new deck and modelled the fields of my deck after those. If changed the note type as the first step then the kanji would end up filling up another field which was cumbersome. I realise now that I could have just renamed it, but alas.
I deleted all fields except for the kanji field where before I had also left the keyword field. I thought that since I had added some furigana and translations of the keyword to my mothertongue that this might have caused something to not work before, but I'm probably mistaken.
Then I changed the note type to that of the new deck, exported the new deck per your instructions, then imported it several times, experimenting with specific options, until I realised they needed to look like how you've outlined it in your post, and voila!

Thanks for your help, you've been tremendously helpful.

Yay, another deck with stories stolen away from the site AND copyrighted stories from Heisig.

Shameless stealing of content, plain and simple. Deck is basically piracy.

Didn't someone mention earlier that this deck was taken down following a request from the publisher? That's why.
