I'm a beginning "student" of japanese and I want to get down the kanji first. After some searching I found a review of RTK1 and downloaded the preview. I love study method and it is working well in combination with this wonderful site (at roughly 750 kanji now).
I now would really like to have a hard copy of the book, but so far I haven't found a place to buy it. I'm from the Netherlands (and do not live anywhere near large book stores), so I tried bol.com first, which has the book listed, but after a 3 weeks wait, they cancelled my order. I see the book listed on amazon, and on the pulishers site as well, but sadly, I do not have a credit card. I have a bank account ofcourse, and access to paypal or moneybookers. So, do any of you people have suggestions where I could buy RTK1? Thank you for your replies!

I got mine from thejapanshop.com. Amazon.com was my first pick but back then they weren't well stocked on RtK, and the delivery date was extended so much I had to cancel the order and look elsewhere. But with the 5th edition they may be well stocked now...

So I ordered on thejapanshop.com and it was shipped in 10 days or so, pretty fast. Perhaps if you contact thejapanshop.com directly they will accept a PayPal payment (maybe even ask them for overseas transfer? You need to ask their international bank code (IBAN) for that).

If you give any good book store the ISBN they should be able to order a copy in for you.

Many countries also have prepaid creditcards you can buy at convenience stores etc. You can just pick up a 50 euro or whatever card and order it off Amazon with that.

Thank you all for your replies. http://www.thejapanshop.com does not list RTK1 anymore... Amazon.com/co.uk does only accept credit cards (or checks drawn from a US/UK bank). As far as I know, the shops in the Netherlands do not not sell prepaid credit cards. I've also looked into the option of wirecard.com (online prepaid credit card), but I can't get past the first registration step (error: Your country of residence could not be determined). So, so far no luck yet I'll keep looking for good webshops and will write down the ISBN so that I can try to get a bookstore to order it for me.

Have you tried going to your local bookstore, even if it isn't big, and asking them to order it for you? Even small bookstores can do that. (They just order it from their distributors, usually.) You just need the ISBN number and they should be able to order it. For the English version of RTK1 (5th Edition) it's: 978-0-8248-3165-3

It may take a few weeks, but that should work. If not, you can always contact the publisher directly.

I've e-mailed them before, and they were pretty quick to respond.

After a few hours searching lots of bookshops with the ISBN, I found three stores that have the book in stock, ship international and accept paypal... Powells.com, asiabookroom.com and a1books.com. Does anyone from here have some experience with these shops? (just for some personal assurance ).
Other stores sometimes state that the book is out of stock at the publisher. It takes a few days for money to arrive at my paypal, so I could ask bol.com why they cancelled my order (which I now suspect is because the publisher is without stock).

Love that ^^ You must be an english speaker to mix up a's and e's. "Verkering" makes me think of love relations; "goede relatie" or "goede verhouding" are more natural choices. But keep it up. You're on your way to dutch fluency!

Inderdaad dacht ik dat ik "verkaring" had geschreven. Niet "verkering". Maar ik weet niet als "verkaring" misschien ook een slechte keus was. Oeps!

Mijn familie komt uit Nederland en ik houd van buitenlands kulturen. Voordat ik heb japans gestudeeren, ik studeerde frans, spaans, duits en ook het nederlands. Maar nu heb ik zo veel jaren japans gestudeeren, en ik lees nog zo weinig, dat ik geloof soms dat er is geen hoop voor mij. Alleen maar hier, van deze website, krijg ik een beetje (hoop) omdat ik kan iets waardig nog leren en ik ben niet alleen. Schrijven en lezen de japanse taal is niet gemakkelijk!

"Ervaring" is inderdaad het betere woord. Wel, wel, dit moet de eerste keer zijn dat ik op een forum een student Nederlands aantref. Een ervaring op zich Een grammaticale tip: let er iets meer op het werkwoord op het einde van de zin te plaatsen in bijzinnen. Bvb. "dat ik soms geloof dat er geen hoop voor mij is."

Japans leren lezen is voor velen een lange strijd. Voordat ik naar Japan kwam, had ik het al eenmaal naast me neergelegd, als zijnde mogelijk, maar niet doenbaar met de tijd die ik er voor over heb. Eenmaal in Japan deed ik er alles voor om het te leren, want ik kreeg het gevoel een complete analfabeet te zijn, niet erg aangenaam. Dit ging schoksgewijs. Pas met RTK kwam er systeem in. Het gevoel alle basiskanji's (joyo) te kennen is geweldig, en met die stimulans ben ik ook meteen aan RTK2 begonnen. Niet langer twijfelen, weten.
