Raw manga difficult to find

#1
I used to be able to find raw (in Japanese) manga online, but not lately. It's very hard to find it compared to manga translated into English. I am able to occasionally find something available for shipping overseas, but that is not feasible for me nor possible most of the time. I want to be able to read manga on my computer screen so I can use KanjiTomo for any words I don't know. I've also never found cbr files for raw manga; just image files. Any recommendations or advice?

There was this really comprehensive website called rawscans which worked pretty well combined with something like JDownloader, but it's been down for some time now. There are other websites you can google for, but all of them are a pain and none have the same degree of coverage.

Most raw manga scans posted on the web are sourced from Japanese P2P networks, Perfect Dark in particular I think. Setting up Perfect Dark takes some effort and it requires 40GB of buffer space, but once you have it in place you can snatch a great deal of raw manga, original visual novels, doujin works, and other stuff that can be hard to come by, given a little patience with the sluggishness of the transfers.

A good deal of popular manga is torrented on Nyaa, I recommend checking there first actually if you're looking for something. Keep in mind that many of those torrents have kanji/kana titles rather than romaji or English translations. They often have volume batches so you can grab an entire series in one go.

I'm pretty confident there's at least one place on IRC where raw scans are distributed through "good old" XDCC, though I haven't found it yet. Not really a priority either since I manage to get almost anything I need from the above sources.

By the way, cbz/cbr/cb7 files are just renamed zip/rar/7z files. You can easily make them yourself if you have the images, or change the extension if you downloaded an archive.

Your post was very helpful, Savii. I was able to find a couple of volumes of manga that I was looking for (Pluto by Urasawa), and figured out easily how to make cbz files. I hope I'll be able to find some more volumes, but at least I can use this for studying.

There MIGHT be IRC channels out there covering Raw manga still, but my quick search is leaving me with this feeling that niche channels are dying out. Best bet would be to look in the channels focused on just scanlated manga and see if you can find a person running a Raw bot.

There are still some sites covering Raws. Do a google for "raw manga" look for a reddit post in the results.

IMO, Perfect Dark is the better option. As Savii pointed out, you need a certain amount of "Buffer Space." I believe its termed something like Unity, and there are guides out there that can explain it. You'll have trouble getting downloads and what not until you fill that space. Its meant to stop leeches. You can fill it quickly by uploading stuff you have, so if you have a large collection of anime vids (40gb+?) upload that and that will satisfy the unity requirement and make it easier to use Perfect Dark.

I set up PD multiple times, never did anything to speed-fill the 40GB Unity buffer and never experienced any problems because of it either. It's very well possible that peers with little Unity get assigned a lower priority, but you'll still get almost anything given some patience (downloads being idle is normal, the software is just "hunting" for peers who can provide the necessary blocks and then reel the file in). The Unity cache will easily fill up by itself anyway just by keeping the program running in the background.

If you don't mind just reading the manga in your browser and don't necessarily feel like you have to have it downloaded, then there are a ton of raws here:

Are there raws on there or just Chinese translations?

The 日文版 category (51) on the iibq website is for raw manga in Japanese, and the other ones are Chinese translations.

Does anyone have any other website suggestions? You can also include stuff like IRC, p2p, etc.

p2p is still the king of japanese media piracy afaik, perfect dark is what I see being the second stop after I see people exhaust their first option (which is private DDLs)

I don't see talking about piracy in too much detail as a good thing Wink
