Many of you have heard of Niji: it's an application for watching Japanese TV, similar to Keyhole. It hasn't worked properly for the last few months. And so there have been workarounds. One little known way is to download BETV, which is the same program but for Chinese TV. Then you have to take some of BETV's files and replace Niji's with them (ppp_release is perhaps the most important). So I've had to do this, and edit the config file to eliminate a ppp_release backup that I thought might be the problem. I've also had to make three different logins because I forgot the first one's password and the site wouldn't send a password reset link when it said it would, the second login had an email address that was too long (even thought it was accepted initially), and the third works but now I am told to update the program before I can continue watching.
All this for nothing. What are they doing?

I had an "upgrade" thingy today too... I clicked on upgrade, waited a bit, it was showing some downloads (among them several ppp* files so may be the latest update have at least the right (read working) ones).
I bet if you install it from scratch you dont get the upgrade bit.
Anyway, it works, i m watching it right now.

You're right, it does work now! I really wasn't expecting that. I thought it'd just upgrade to the latest version that didn't work, like it was before. Thanks!

I have Niji setup in xubuntu, but all I get is audio. Has anyone had this problem before? I allowed it to update yesterday, and prior to that, I added the BETV files (which I imagine were overwritten by the update though).
update: I added some files via winetricks such as various directx drivers and wmp10, but I still get no picture. If I find a fix, I'll post it here.

Chillimuffin, Niji has been working ever since the most recent update, without requiring the BETV trick. Nightbreak let us know that.

I just downloaded Niji for the first time (last version is June 2014), and when I try to watch a channel it asks me to register in N+ Store. I'm not sure if I understand from the previous posts if the registration is mandatory or not? I'll try fiddling with it for a bit.

Yes, you have to register; however, it's free and doesn't ask for much.

Cyborg Ninja, for some reason it hasn't been working for me. Even now not all channels work all the time and sometimes I can't login the first time I try - it seems to be connected to their website being down sometimes. Perhaps there are some other issues as well in my particular case - but as long as I can get it to work most of the time, I'm ok.

Thanks for the replies. I think I was getting the LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 wine niji/NIJI.exe error or something that said -1. It seems to be forcing OpenGL to be used every time. I use Windows 7. Perhaps OpenGL needs to be updated? I'm glad the update has worked for me so far, but I understand everybody's frustration.

I have an issue regarding Niji- I registered some time ago, and meanwhile I changed laptops. I forgot my password, but when I try to recover it I never receive the email. Anyone with this problem?

Depending on your email provider, it may be getting filtered out (Yahoo is notorious for this). Make sure you have the address white-listed and try again; if it still doesn't work, their email system may be down (wouldn't be unusual, as automated email programs are surprisingly finicky; so if they don't keep it up properly...).
