A couple questions on building chains

#1
I just tried out Kanji chains today using RTK2's index, and it was pretty fun. I don't know how effective it'll be, but it's more fun than straight memorization so I think I'll stick with it.

I would assume it's best to make a coherent story in which the characters are connected, but I'm hearing people talk about "visualing" the character in the location. Could anyone tell me which method they prefer? (Or whether the second method even exists?)

Second, I was thinking that I'd skim over each of my stories every now and then so I don't forget them, but I'm going to save any real review for when I'm done so I can use an index to get all the characters randomized. I'd like to use a character list and use it with a Kanji reviewing program, but I don't feel like manually inputting all those characters... do you know if there's some online list of Heisig Kanji sorted by on-reading?
