Do you have any recommendations for a really simple program which would take a region from an image and give me the text in the clipboard ? Ideally not Microsoft software that requires installing a lot of other unnecessary packages :p

PS: this is for english, using mainly serif fonts but the backgrounds are not 100% black or white (game captures).

Well, I'd say Greenshot, but it requires the free MS Office 2007 OCR software, I think?

I've scanned the hell out of a lot of stuff with it for Anki A+ cert cards, but that was a year ago.

It's still worth looking into, or just do an Alternativeto.net search for an alternative to Greenshot.

Thanks. I found Capture2Text, very quick to use for my needs.

There are Japanese OCR into it, might be worth looking into.

It goes in the tray and you can just press Cmd+Q and drag area with the mouse and it goes in clipboard.

Is there a Mac version of this available? (didn't you used to be Mac based Fabrice?)

I've been using wine for running some of CB's tools with mixed success. I haven't tried with capture2text, but its worth a try. And having wine & macports/homebrew installed are convenient for running the odd program that doesn't normally work on mac.
