Whenever I see them on variety shows, it's usually just someone who does a little dance and then says a word or phrase and then people laugh. They're not even puns or anything, they're nothing. I don't understand what is funny. What is the point? An example of one I just saw: Girl was pretending to cry saying 「えんえんえんえん」 and then said 「円高ドル安」 and everyone laughed.

I wondered if えんえんえんえん could be interpreted somehow, but I only know 円 and 延々, so drew a blank.
As an aside, searching on Tangorin turned up 冤, a weird kanji I've never seen before listed as 'common', and appearing in no less than 2 words also listed as common.

Their definition of "common" is kind of strange. According to that it's in the 2300s for the 2500 most common characters appearing in newspapers -- I would call that "uncommon" or possibly even "rare". I've seen 冤罪 before but it's not the type of word you see every day.
