What age are you?

20, started 3 days ago and up to frame 55.

I've been poking Japanese with a stick since I was about 14, I took GCSE when I was 17, started doing Japanese and Spanish at university two years ago but had to drop out in the first semester (nothing to do with the course itself). Now back at university somewhere else doing Computing and decided I missed my languages so I'm trying to pick them back up. My dream is to be a polyglot - if this is your dream too, avoid England as the general attitude towards languages here leaves something to be desired. Douglas Adams put it well when he said, "In England, it is considered socially incorrect to know stuff or think about things. It is worth bearing this in mind when visiting."

Out of curiousity, are there any other people here who've taken GCSE or A Level Japanese? How would you say it compares to JLPT?

Frame 75

*I'm so embarrassed that I'm not further frame-wise...I should be WAY farther by now, but I lost some motivation which equals a long break... Sad
Now I'm trying to get back on track and Anki + AJATT= motivation and fun!!!

I'm 15.
I just got my book yesterday, but I've been working on and off for a few days at about 20+ per day, with the online sample.

I'm only at frame 88 though.

Found this site 12 months ago but because of my university studies (and because learning japanese is more of a hobby than a class assignment), I'm only at around frame 120

However, the kanji I learned well so far are stuck well into my brain. Wink My secret? write the kanji on your hand, that way you're always looking at it when you're bored at class. hehehe

39. I've taken a few Japanese classes starting from the 80's, and I retained a little kanji knowledge. I've been watching anime since the 80's, originally raw because there weren't fansubs yet. I've more recently watched some dramas and played a few games.

Last year I managed to visit Japan, buy a laptop from two sales clerks who did not speak try to speak English with me, and I called a hotel to ask if they had rooms available and understood the answer.

Still, my kanji skills have dwindled while my conversation skills have improved. I found Anki through the AJATT site, and RtK through Anki.

I am unemployed, looking for work, and unmarried. I started Wednesday, so this is my fifth day, and I'm up to frame 518. I've only had a few come back for review, and I'm sure my pace will slow down once those start coming back in droves.

I have high hopes for SRS cramming.

39. I first started glancing at this sight about a year ago but didn't pick up RTK and start creating stories until about 6 months ago. I am on frame 2086 and working on RTK II as well.

Finished Hesig I, II, and III(but not the readings for III)

I've reviewed each Heisig kanji using Anki ~53,000 times (10.82 days worth) now. Smile

22. Lived in Tokyo all of 2007 and studied Japanese. When I came back, I noticed I had no effective way of keeping up with my kanji studied and I started to forget them. That's why I started using Heisig, but until I found this site, I didn't find it as effective as I do know.

15. Last year of high school {Grade 12} though.

44. Have had the book for a while, but started in earnest around Aug 15 or 20, 2008? Up to frame 500 now. Found this site through kanjiclinic.
And IT IS AMAZING. Thank you Fabrice.

Lived in Japan for 3 years, 1997 -2000. Knew nothing before i went. learned a bit while there but spoke a lot of English at the Eikaiwa and at home, etc. Since returning to Canada, i have been (to quote pawnshopbassist (above)) poking at Japanese with a stick since then.
A few lessons. Stop. A class. Stop. A new class. Stop. A new textbook. stop. I have a shelf full of books. Finally decided to kick myself in the ass and get serious--either I want to learn how to read and write and speak this language or I'm just a dabbling dilettante. This site is making a difference, i feel.

24. I did Heisig back in August 2007, got to about 1800 and quit (I was too excited to actually start reading Japanese stuff, and I neglected my reviews). That hurt me for a while, especially without any of the 馬 or 舟 kanji (there are really a lot of useful kanji in that last 250), and a few others that I wish I had gotten in, but I pushed through with my reading and I am pretty happy with where I am right now.

I've been studying Japanese for about 2 years, but the time before Heisig was definitely not as effective as my time since has been... I keep going back to things that I used to get frustrated with and realized more and more that I can understand those things. That is a great motivational tool: if you don't understand something you are reading, just keep up with your studies and come back to it in a 4-6 months and see how well you can understand it then.

(newly) 21, just finished adding last chapter today Took me somewhere like 3.5-4 months to get through RTK1.

Found the site through AJATT, bless his heart. I use anki but this site is instrumental in speeding up my study. By the time I got to #1500 I was able to add 50 new kanji every day until the end.

52. On Frame 369 and been working on this for about three weeks. I've been using the http://knol.google.com/k/chishikiyoku-pr...1atct2i2/2# site plus ANKI for review and have caught up, now waiting for Lesson 17 to be posted. This is actually fine because I noticed I was starting to get overwhelmed and need to consolidate a bit before adding more kanji. I've studied Japanese off and on for 20 years, mostly "on" for the last 5 but have ALWAYS had great difficulty remembering kanji until I discovered this method!

Maybe she was forced to learn Japanese?

I turned 50 last month.

BTW I'm surprised at the number of school-age members, but I guess that's a sign of my age. I never had the benefit of anything like this site when I was learning Japanese at school. I remember making my own flash cards to learn hiragana back in 1972, then getting annoyed that I learned it so quickly I had to throw them away. Didn't bother with flashcards after that. We only needed about 300 kanji for high school.

I'm 16. I've been learning Japanese for almost a year now and until last week I was completely pissed off with how quickly I was forgetting kanji (I've been introduced to about 300 in class, and I doubt I can write out half of them from memory). I had heard a lot of good things about RTK ever since I started thinking about learning Japanese, but I thought it wouldn't work for me, because I had already tried to learn Japanese on my own before but couldn't learn anything besides kana. Anyway, RevTK has been helping me a lot! I started three days ago and I'm only on frame 150, but now I think I can actually make it through the whole book. Thanks a lot, RevTK!
