16, birthday in two weeks? I think. Anime was a large part of my life back when I was 11, too much in fact, this lasted to maybe 14 and it's died down now. That evolved into a much bigger interest on not only the otaku culture but a large amount of their culture in general. Long story short I decided to learn Japanese about 1 month ago in order to read literature mainly and here I am. xD

16, birthday four days ago
And according to anki, I've been studying for 7.6 months. I'm really only learning Japanese cause it looks cool, I like languages, and I have nothing better to do. On 1827 kanji right now!

My 24th birthday is in a month!
Since I started over totally a month ago, I have 526 kanjis memorized (including on and kun readings) with the help of stories I make up myself.

I think this is an interesting topic, so

I'm 13, been using Heisig since April 1st 2013 (lol) and am at frame 1370, although I've stopped using RTK for the time being to focus on immersion, Core2k and Tae Kim

Wow, you guys are young. I'm 23 and I'm only around level N5, but I haven't studied Kanji seriously until recently, and I haven't taken any classes.

13 ^_^
I started last month, but am making pretty good progress so far. Although I don't know much Japanese, I'm kind of preparing to start studying for real. And I'm starting off with Kanji.

Good luck guys, I wish I'd found these study tools when I was 13!
I think I've posted in this thread at some point before but I just turned 20 anyway.

20 in June.
I finished RTK 3000 about a year and a half ago, I think. I gave up my reviews after about 3 months though.
Since then I've done Core6k and Tae Kim. Currently I am going through misc words I have come across. I have added 2500~ on top of the Core6k. I am also doing a Sub2srs deck and uisukii's DoBJG deck.

Turned 26 last February.
Have yet to finish RTK yet (started in 2008 and got to frame 1600 in 1 month then quit, started again in 2010 and got to frame 600 in 2 weeks and basically quit again although I keep up with the reviews still) but I passed the N1 in Dec 2011 and am (probably) going to pass kanji kentei 3 kyuu next month! (I hope!!)
I wish I had all these tools back when I was 13 instead of just stumbling upon them half way through college :/. Oh well! Best of luck to all of you though! Happy studying

Saiga Wrote:20 in June.Sounds like great progress! I'm curious, how do you feel core6k has improved your reading and listening comprehension (or what do you find it helps most with)? I intend to do core6k and I'd be glad to get some pointers from someone who's further along than I am.

I turned 28 last week.
I started trying to learn Japanese in January 2011. I spent a year with satisfactory progress (but I was not satisfied with that of course), and realized the hard way that self-teaching a language is actually about learning how to learn first, then learning. I started RTK1 in earnest in December 2011, found koohii late January and "finished" March 2012.
Recently I've been transitioning more and more to native materials, watching anime and then reading the manga, as well as reading books in their English translation and then in the native.
The last couple weeks I've been pulling out all the stops in finding language exchange partners for real life and skype and it should work out nicely as long as I keep it up. I find that one-on-one meeting is much nicer for me than the "meet-ups" I tried and immediately dropped.

25 in August. Finished RtK 6th ed. late last year. Primary focus is now entirely on vocabulary.

@Animosophy
In my experience Core6k has given me a good foundation vocabulary, but that said, within the first two weeks of completing Core I had come across over 1000 words that were new to me. Still I think it was very valuable to do Core. However, it’s not the end all be all of vocabulary decks.
As far as listening is concerned I would say that Core helped me very little in this area. I mostly focused on the words and not the sentences. Anyway, Sub2srs is far better and more entertaining than the Core sentences.

Wanted to learn Japanese since around 13 or so but I turned 30 this year. I'm always amazed when I see people that are around 13 or 15 starting out with all the resources I didn't have at that age, you guys are gonna have an awesome time.

Glad that I can actually have fun and be learning at the same time rather than do tiresome studying.
