Should I take the n2?

#1
Hey everyone,

Short introduction:
I've been reading the forums quite for a while now. Just never actually made an account.
I started studying Japanese about 2 years ago, but I'd say I started being more serious since last December.

In the time I've finished Japanese for busy people, Basic Kanji, RTK, Tae kim and have completed 3500 of the core 6000 on Iknow. I've also completed various other decks in anki for example: Jalup beginner, and am halfway at Jalup intermediate.

Starting from next week I will be in Tokyo until the end of February for an internship, This means I will be working full time. I think i'd learn about 1 hour a day, because in my free time I'd love to discover the city.

As of now I think I'd easily pass the n3, but I've read that the n3 doesn't have much value.
Do you guys have any advice? Should I take it, or just go on studying and take it another time?

Thank you for your time, and any advice is welcome

I'd recommend you to have a look at the sample questions on the JLPT website to quickly gauge your ability to be sure. Your assessment seems about right though.

Based on the information you provided I think N2 should be doable, so it's mostly up to you. Is there a specific reason for taking the test, do you require the certificate or is it just for fun? Taking the test obviously isn't mandatory at all. However, I think it might be good signing up for N2 to have a somewhat tangible and binding study plan. That'll help you to force yourself to also do some formal studying besides work and fun. So I'd say go for it!

Thanks for your advice!

My reason for taking the test would be for working in Japan in the future and building up my resume.
I've done the sample questions and as I thought, N2 is quite hard but n3 is fairly easy. I hope that I might be able to pick certain things up faster while being in Tokyo. In the mean time I'll keep doing my daily vocabulary which is about 30 a day. I think i'll sign up for it, if I pass it will be great, if I fail I'll have more experience for the next time. =)

There's a bunch of useful JLPT level specific vocabulary, kanji, and grammar lists on this site to help you focus specifically on things likely to be tested.
