Project Gorgon (an "indie" MMO on Kickstarter)

#1
Heard out about this indie MMO on Kickstarter.

You can download and play the alpha for free. There doesn't seem to be restrictions.

My first impressions were pretty bad to be honest. But it does a good job scratching that oldschool EverQuest itch Wink

ps: I you try it, don't stay on the "guest" account for too long. It's buggy... I got disconnected and couldn't log back in my "guest" character. Click the little exclamation symbol on the right sidebar ingame, to create an account.

That has to be one of the ugliest games I've ever seen.

If you can get past the ugly newbie cave, and the alpha graphics it's actually a little gem and a really fun game. The world is not very large yet so you can really enjoy discovering everything on your own and at your leisure. People are very friendly on global chat. It's a little bit like re-experiencing the early days of EverQuest. There are no instanced areas as far as I know, dungeons are just a part of the world where you can kill monsters, but also trade with NPCs, solve puzzles, learn new skills from creatures .. and there's tons of skills anywhere from Psychology, to Mentalism, Alchemy, Gardening, the list goes on. And crafting is not just slapped on, it's actually inherent to the game. Like you could be crafting research spells to unlock your next Fire Magic skills, or you could be cooking something as a gift to a NPC who will then agree to teach you an entirely new skill. For example you don't get teleport until much later, from a faerie and then you need Gems to use it, which you can find from Geology, but .. you can also buy back many things that players sold to NPCs Smile

The trailer reminds me of when I used to play Runescape years ago...I don't have the time to do stuff like that now, but I hope it gets funded!

@dizmox This is not it ... it's sometimes described as a Asheron's Call meets EverQuest meets Ultima Online.

If it has a taming system like that of uo, where mobs had different stats, I'm going to spend all my money on this xD

There is a Animal Handling skill and stables where you can store the pets I presume. It is at least partly working because I saw people going about with a tiger or a sewer rat Tongue I am not familiar with Ultima Online so I don't know if it's similar.

ps: it seems like you can program golems also to spam some skills, but I haven't tried that yet. I read some players used a golem to spam heals in a difficult area of a dungeon.

Btw I'm still playing it. The game is really great. Very stable as well. It really doesn't feel like an alpha. It's frozen on me only once when I used the "high res screenshot" feature.

They added a new zone just recently, Druid and Hammer skills. Druids can even fly in raven form Smile

The Kickstarter is failing, but they are looking into other ways of supporting. Hopefully they'll come up with a system similar to Path of Exile where you can directly support them through their site.

Their player base is very small though, it's barely hitting a hundred concurrent people atm. This game's really a gem, if you miss the old MMOs where you felt the satisfaction of earning something and explore and not get everything served on a plate.

Thanks a lot, now I'm up at three in the morning playing an MMO, just like the old days... Goodbye productivity!
An actual thanks though, it's really fun and I wouldn't have found it otherwise, since I gave up on MMOs a few years ago.

Hehe, sorry about that ^_^

It has addictive elements similar to EverQuest, where you have those nice audio cues and flashy sparkles every time you level up a skill, and you keep getting those little "ups" every now and then.

On the other hand, it is quite soloable atm if you want to. There is not yet this big pressure to stay logged all evening because your guild wants to kill Arathrax the Mega Dragon or whatnot. Tongue

"You can inscribe messages on items, write books, even leave notes for other players. Make your name as an in-game poet, or just record your best kills on your sword."

Lol, There'll be some interesting poets all right...

I haven't seen the "inscribed items" yet, but there is a library with player-written (mini)books in Serbule Keep.

There isn't much trolling there if that's what you had in mind Wink Presumably because it takes a bit of work to raise that skill so I guess it is for roleplayers.

One of the player-written books contains codes to some of the puzzles (spoiler).

Wait till the game gets bigger, haha.

Really though, this game does look pretty neat, I'm downloading it right now. I almost hope it doesn't get too big because of all I hear about it's great community. I've seen it happen, it would be a shame if the community were to go sour.

Hey guys

Project: Gorgon is running a Kickstarter again, and this time they are doing better and past their initial goal already.

I pledged a small sum because I had lots of fun with it last winter.

The game is not the prettiest thing but it's really fun.. kind of a mix of Diablo loot and Ultima skill based progression with some quirky animations and sounds... It's a very small indie MMO so the community was very nice last time I played... I guess the fact it's such a small MMO is what made it a bit special for me.

Also they have a nice wiki over here with all the past game updates.

EDIT: Doh I forgot to say it's been playable for awhile already.
