"Take Shelter" (7.5/10), a moviehouse flick made about 5 years ago.
Interesting approach to portraying the fears and experiences of someone who has a history of paranoid schizofrenia in his family tree and who is beginning to suffer from it himself. The visuals of some of the weather-related hallucinations are quite well done, without having that typical "CGI feel" that blockbuster action movies often have. Not sure I know what to make of the ending, though, but maybe that's a good thing?

youth of the beast (野獣の青春) - "A violent thug plays opposing yakuza bosses against each other."
first 10 minutes are flawless. the staging, direction, framing, the mute nude dance...absolutely hypnotic. after that, it gets more conventinal, but there are still from time to time enough eccentric detours to make this an interesting watch. very good.
wood job (神去なあなあ日常 ) - "After failing his university entrance examinations and being left by his girlfriend, Yuki Hirano decides to join a forestry training program only to discover that the job is much harder than he expected working under his high demanding boss. "
watchable, but predictable and ultimately boring(why 2 hours long running time??) romantic comedy
kuroneko (藪の中の黒猫) - "Two women are raped and killed by samurai soldiers. Soon they reappear as vengeful ghosts who seduce and brutally murder the passing samurai."
expressionistic horror story with elements of social commentary. i think in terms of directing, cinematography, lightning and editing, this is one of the best japanese films i've seen. that being said, it's kinda depressing that a movie made 45 years ago is more stylish and intelligently crafted than any contemporary japanese film i've seen lately.

Saw 風立ちぬ on TV the other night. It had some nice scenes, but the main character's personality was very ... rocklike. Overall didn't do too much for me.

とある飛空士への追憶/The Princess and the Pilot - A noblewoman is engaged to the heir of a foreign country but the only way to get there is a risky flight through enemy territory.
I really enjoyed this. The art was beautiful and the characters and story were engaging. My only real gripe is that the princess's voice acting wasn't always up to the standard of the rest of the movie.

神さまの言うとおり - "Shun Takahata is an ordinary high school student leading a boring life. His life long friend is Ichika Akimoto. One day, a teacher’s head explodes in class. Shun Takahata and his classmates are forced to play a game of death without knowing who, why or how. "
i'm glad that miike is getting more and more money for his films, he deserves it, but making movies for mass market audiences obviously comes with some drawbacks. miike went from being funny and brutal satirist to lame and boring moralist. not only is story here pretty dumb, but what's worse, that dumb story is treated as something serious and meaningful. miike in his best days would ridicule teenage characters in this screenplay and try to sabotage narrative at every corner, but here he plays it straight. i guess it's a no-no to make fun of your target audience in a mainstream movie like this? too bad.
the only thing i liked is intentionally 3D looking 3D bear.

john555 Wrote:Has anyone seen San Andreas yet? Is it worth seeing?I saw Jurassic World last weekend. I give it B-/C+ rating. Has some nostalgic moments from the original movie (I saw it as a kid in theaters too) but it also has a lot of product placement ads. Like Samsung, Verizon Wireless and Mercedes as the major companies being advertised throughout the movie.
And who's planning to see Jurassic Park next week?
Here is an article about it
