Most of the time I try to do this, Google will do some auto complete thing half way through and it will double all of the text I wrote. Does this happen to anyone else?

Could it be that annoying function "Google Instant", or whatever it's called? The one that starts searching before you've finished typing. If so you can turn that off in the settings.
