I wanted to run this deck against the Core deck. Therefore I worked on the word field.

I think that I could separate the word, romaji, word type and translation correctly (actually there are up to 4 word types and translations). At least my reconstruction tests say it worked.

It should be easier with this to change the word type abbreviation, if really needed.

In addition I converted the romaji [to get a chance for a second comparison with Core]. The romaji from the book are sometimes questionable, so I guess that the kana conversion is not perfect too.

There were a few corrections, but I think it remains the same structure - so it should be easy to bring it together with whatever your current status is. Let me know if you could use it.


And btw, this is just amazing what you wife and your sister in law are doing!

Just wanted to point out one small mistake I found while going through it. The sentence is 今議会は開会中です, but the audio is read instead as 今会議は開会中です. Also, the sentence 彼は真実を語った is read as 彼は真実を悟った.

Well, you've got the Japanese expression すみません down nicely ! (It sounds a bit strange in English, apologizing so much ) Very nice code. If/when I begin this deck for vocab, I might convert them to cloze-deletion cards somehow, so I have to fill-in-the-blank: generate kanji given kana and also generate kana given kanji. (No English on the cards of course, after learning them initially.)

But this is a good idea: maybe as part of the v2 upgrade, the word can go in its own span tag to highlight it/hide it/etc. There's a couple of minor problems to watch out for if you do this programmatically:

(1) there are four sentences that are each used by two words. (So eight words out of 5000 produce only four sentences, e.g., その歌手は若い人に人気がある is used for 人 #58 and 若い #397. One sentence, one note, two entries in the "word" and "frequency order" column. The converse is true too: ten words out of 5000 have two sentences demonstrating their multiple meanings).

And (2) sometimes while the word is written in kanji, it's used in the sentence in kana (in the current version at least). Earlier in the thread I noted these kanji to be 敢是幾揃膝癖奪御巡総. Maybe v2 will fix some/all of these kanji-vs-kana discrepancies.

As much as anyone tries to eliminates all mistakes things always slip through the gaps.
So I would like to start using this thread as a place to post mistakes that you find with anything in the deck.

I recommend the following format:

Version of deck: (current version is 1.0)
Sentence: (copy paste the sentence here)
Fault: (typo, furigana error, sound error, etc)
Description of fault: (be as detailed as you like, add recommendations etc.)

Sentence: この鍋はミルクを温めるのに使っています。 I use this pan for warming milk.
Fault: Translation Error
Description of fault: I'm fairly certain the translation should be, "I'm using this pan for warming milk."

Well the English translations have always been "meh" in my opinion.


You are correct with your translation, however この鍋はミルクを温めるのに使っています。 can have two possible translations.

The 使っています indicating you are using the 鍋 in order to warm milk right now.

or

Use the 鍋 'as a habit' or 'on a regular basis' or in order to warm milk.



Here is a bit of an explanation as to why (Genki 1, 2nd edition, page 170.) :

You can also use a ~ています sentence to describe what a person does by occupation or by habit. The example below therefore has two possible interpretations: 1. you are teaching English right at this moment; and 2. you are an English-language teacher (but are not necessarily in class right now.)

The second example sentence means Mary is in the habit of studying Japanese (but of course she does not spend 24 hours doing so.)

Example sentence 1. 私は英語を教えています。
Example sentence 2. メアリーさんは毎日日本語を勉強しています。

Or

メアリーさんはTシャツを着ています。 It can either mean "Mary is wearing a T shirt right now" or "Mary wears T shirts." (on a regular basis).

Thats my understanding of it anyhow.

Thanks for the error report. I have a look at the sentence and re record the audio for version 2. (should only be a few days away.)

I have no plans of uploading the audio to a torrent or anything like that. The audio is directly recorded to each card individually using the record functionality in anki.

Version 2.0 is now uploaded and can be accessed using the same link as version 1.0.

You should just be able to update you existing anki deck without losing your scheduling information.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to sort out the splitting of the fields into different segments, and as I am personally happy with the current format, I am happy for someone else to take the reigns on that and upload it themselves.

I was cross-referencing the 2.0 deck with the book by Tono et al., and here's eight discrepancies I found:

(1) Anki deck doesn't have word #22:
22 する suru v. do; make
仕事をしなければなりません。 — I have to do my work.


(2) Anki deck has two sentences labeled 177, the first of these should be 176:
177 服にインクのしみが付いた。 <-- should be 176
177 この部屋は日が良く当たって、とても暑くなる。

(3) Anki deck has two sentences labeled 395, once by itself (彼女は力が強い。 in Anki) and once with #288 (彼は力が強い。 in Anki), although the difference (kare vs kanojo) is not there in the book. I think "She is strong" can be deleted but your call:
395 力 chikara n. power, strength
彼は力が強い。 — He is strong.
288 強い tsuyoi i-adj. strong, powerful
彼は力が強い。 — He is strong.

(4) Anki deck missing #557:

I have just fixed all of the number double ups, not really sure how that could possibly happen though.

Its hard to check because my personal version of the deck is different than the deck I use to upload where I have deleted / changed quite a few cards, added pics etc.

As for the four cards that are missing, I can't really remember but I would have deleted it at some stage due to sounding unnatural or something like that. I know #1477 is defiantly in that boat.

To be honest, if people already using this deck then I would assume they are at least at intermediate level before starting, so not having a card with 仕事, を and しなければなりません shouldn't worry them too much.

I would love to use this deck to practice but comprehension and writing using format like this:

But going through 5k sentences manually would be a very time consuming process. Is there anybody who is interested in the same thing?
Splitting the work would be very helpfull.

I've noted that pronunciation differs from voices in Core 2k/Core 6k.
Particularly: vowels う、い are not so frequently reduced as in Core 2k/Core 6k.

Is it just normal pronunciation of normal people (not NHK pronunciation) or maybe it's some local accent?

Hi Ingaz, glad you like the deck. Do you have a specific sentence that you notice it in?

The narrator comes from 北九州, but to be honest, I can't really tell due to the fact I listen to her voice everyday so its what I am used to.

None of the sentences were region specific though (i.e. she would usually say '良いやん' instead of '良いじゃん' or '知らんっちゃ' instead of '知りません' etc.) but you won't find anything like that featured in the deck.

The voices in core6k etc, sound very 'textbook-ish' for lack of a better word and try very hard to have 'proper' pronunciation, its up to you what you prefer.

Hello Nayr, I'm not a specialist in japanese pronunciation.

So I think I'm more used to television pronuciation.

Specific sentences: I've noticed that in such sentences as 服を買った　Core2k/Core6k often pronunced with reduced う and your wife rarely reduce う　in such words.

At first I supposed Kansai ben (wikipedia: "In Standard, vowel reduction frequently occurs, but it is rare in Kansai.").

Anyway, I like the voice of your wife and I don't much care for 'proper' pronunciation.

山に紅葉を見に行った。


The word is 紅葉 [こうよう]、however my wife did the voice as 紅葉 [もみじ].

The difference between the two is that もみじ refers to the changing of leaves in autumn on the Japanese maple tree, where こうよう refers to all deciduous trees changing color in the fall.

Personally I just modified the card accordingly (easier than re-recording the voice) to reflect the もみじ reading as card 977 uses the こうよう reading.

The definition [とも tomo p. all, both] doesn't match the sentence.

In-order to match the sentence it should be [遅くとも osokutomo p. at the latest; at least.]

Or alternatively find another sentence that matches [とも tomo p. all, both] like: その包みは二つとも私のです (The packages are both mine. / The packages both belong to me.)

PS: to the one who are doing this, how do you evaluate yourself? Based on the main vocab or on the entire sentence?

Well I have always been a fan of the sentence method over the word method, (if you can understand the sentence, by default you also understand the word anyhow) hence the sentence focus of the deck. But of course you can use it however you like.

On another note, Id be interested to know how far through this deck people are. I myself am only 1120 cards through (I took a large 6 week break over the christmas period where I did my reviews but didn't add new cards.)

How many cards are you though the deck? How many new cards a day do you add? Are you going in order of frequency or are you using morphman (like me) to change the order of new cards?
