jessem Wrote:The word "colloquial" does not have a clear meaning in language/grammar, and it often refers to different things depending on the writer. Sometimes it is a pejorative term referring to language use that the writer considers incorrect. I've seen it used to mean any spoken style, but this had more meaning back when there was a much bigger difference between spoken and written styles than there is now. Personally I prefer to use terms like "spoken" or "informal"; those are also not very precise but they may be more clear than "colloquial."Quote:I do want to clarify one thing. It might be because I am not as familiar as i thought with the word "Slang", but the Expressions on the site are not slang. They are natural expressions which aren't limited by "youngster use". I wish I knew all Joyo-Kanji. No offence by the wayAh, I guess in my head the words "colloquial" and "slang" are interchangeable, but really it's more of a sliding scale that goes formal/textbook language -> colloquial/actual everyday stuff -> slang. My mistake.

Having some computer issues, so I won't be posting at the same pace as before. I will do my best to work on content on the spare desktop I am using at the moment

Keep up the good work! When I get my laptop back i'll add your blog to my Link page.
I should be able to work on the website again this weekend. This time hopefully on a non-supersonic-high-pitch-noise-emitting laptop. I am going to give that drama a shot, possibly resulting in using some of it for my page.

Looks like there haven't been any updates to the site in a while. Too bad. The idea seemed good.
I've started my own collection of colloquial Japanese sentences. But I'm avoiding taking things from TV and print media, and instead limiting it to stuff I've actually heard in real life (i.e., Japanese friends, coworkers, and students). You can check out my growing list here: http://cleverphilip.com/j-drip/

Hi TheVinster, thanks for the critique. Sorry to come across as pushy. I just feel that I have a nice free resource, that fills a real gap, and that fellow Japanese learners could benefit from. If you were me, how would you go about spreading the word?

If you were me, how would you go about spreading the word?Don't concern yourself too much about him; he always gets pushy when people register and seem to just post advertisements to their own stuff without much other contribution to the forum (This is also a person that also complains about failing JLPT N1 despite playing DotA 2 all day every day for the weeks/months leading up to it). I don't think two or three posts is really going to impose much or bother anyone else a whole lot.
If you want some constructive criticism I'd imagine that people other than myself would likely not be too keen on having to subscribe to a mailing list (even with the one-click unsubscribe option); not only that, but this only amounts to being able to receive one sentence a day. A lot of people here like to delve pretty heavily into resources, so I think it would be of more beneficial to us if you had some kind of listing of all your stuff/scenarios for us to peruse at our own pace. Is there a reason you're going for the once a day mailing list format instead?
Also I don't know if the intention is to eventually introduce some kind of premium version of this, but it does look a lot like a "this is free but you can upgrade at a cost to a better version of this" sort of site with how bare it is and with the "subscribe to our free mailing list" thing. I don't see any mention on this page of a paid upgrade but that's the sort of vibe it gives just from this sort of layout. It might just be my own bias from seeing other kinds of product pages. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing to present a paid upgrade thing if that is what you eventually want to do, but it might turn others off more than me.

Hi, Flamerokz. Thanks for the constructive feedback!
I chose the one-a-day email format because my friends (many of them other foreigners living in Miyazaki) are casual learners and asked me for something small and doable. You're right: the people on this forum are much more hardcore, so one-a-day seems laughable.
I made a bare list of the first 3 weeks' worth of phrases for you to browse at your own pace:

What do you think of this format? If it's useful, let me know.
No plans to sell sentences or stuff. Words are free. : ) I'll review the layout to dampen the salesman vibe.
Doing it over email is fun for me since I can see who's using it and get more direct feedback.
