I've read about that for years. Is that real, has anyone on this site had an awkward moment in Japan when they shook hands with someone with parts of their fingers missing?
Or is this just some old fantasy?

It's generally, the tip of the pinky finger, and you gotta have a major ***** up before you yubitsume. Assuming you go off to places that yaks hang out, then yes you will meet people with severed fingers. No, it's not common. and there are prosthetic for everyday life to cover the missing digit. It's also really depended on your area, Like the city I live in has yakuza, but not as much as say Kobe. Have I shook hands with a yak? No, have I see it before? Yes, I promptly left the area.

I've met (and talked) with a few Yakuzas a couple of years back. I asked them about 指詰め and they confirmed that yes, it is very much a reality, though it is much less common now as it was a few decades back. It's hard to give credit to that though, seeing as gangsters tend to like inflating reality a notch. However common it may or may not be, prosthetics are definitely a thing.

It's probably less common now because they realized having parts of your fingers cut off makes typing on your computer/hand held device a b--tch.

I have met a few of them. I used to hang out with a bunch of riffraff kids back when I lived in Yokohama. One of my friends uncles had a missing fingertip. Was a pretty cool dude. (Btw if their missing the tip that means they have left the yakuza). Another one of my friends dad was still in the yakuza, and had a gun to show that was hidden in the house.
Lol at my life.
