I wanted to start Remembering The Kanji long time ago. Downloaded it in PDF format, but after quite short time of study (about 60 kanji's) I realised that I've got a problems with few english meanings of kanji for exemple prosperous, a drop of. When I wanted to recall the kanji I was thinking about it's english meaning, which as think is quite unnatural as my native language is Polish. All the stories and kanji names should be understood in my native language, while learning I should translate everything from english to my universal language.
After that I decided to buy RTK1, mainly to write translations to few english words on the side to let myself learn more efficiently and fluently. I got a book and I'm thinking about starting it.
Is there anyone who is not native english learner of Remembering The Kanji and could give me some advices on that matter?

My advice is simple - try using english as much as you can to avoid confusion, even if you are willing to change the keywords provided by Heising. Some of these keywords are synonyms (旺,昭) or words with multiple (sometimes unrelated) meanings (現), so it's very difficult to make a good translation. You will encounter a few words that a non-native is unlikely to know (ladle!!! - hihihi), but I have a feeling that "eventide" was a surprise for everyone. It might be discouraging that you are going to learn more new english words than japanese ones while studying japanese, but I wouldn't call it a waste . If any of the stories provided by Heising is too difficult for you to "think" it in english, then try user created stories from this site.

W przypadku opcji z polskimi słowami kluczowymi, po stronie „za” mamy brak problemów ze zrozumieniem tych słów. Rownież mnemoniki będą tworzone w języku ojczystym, więc pewnie ich wymyślanie będzie szybsze.

Po stronie „przeciw” mamy ograniczenie się do używania języka polskiego. Zaleta szybkości tworzenia własnych mnemoników, w momencie kiedy angielskie „gotowce” są dostępne na koohii.com, może się okazać wątpliwa.

Moja rada byłaby taka: używaj angielskie słowami kluczowe kiedy nie masz trudności/wątpliwości co do ich znaczenia. W przypadku kiedy słówko jest Ci obce, dalej używaj słowka angielskiego, ale dodaj do tego słówka jego polski odpowiednik.

Podczas wymyślania mnemoników, korzystaj z historyjek z koohii.com. To czy te historyjki będziesz pomiętał w j. polskim, czy angielskim, nie powinno mieć znaczenia, ponieważ celem tych historyjek jest zidentyfikowanie elementów podstawowych danego znaku, a te w momencie przypominania znaku powinny być niezależne od języka.

Twoje karty mogłyby wyglądać tak:

Thats what happened to me. After some time I realized it was getting pretty difficult to me to make a good translation.

So I decided to go on using english only. It may have made the whole process lasts longer to me, but meanwhile I was learning new words in english as well.

Another thing. Sometimes it takes time to get the right meaning in the translation process.

As a non-native english speaker I am especially worried, that despite my feeling, that I understand the meaning of a particular word very well, there still might be something I'm missing. Consider 現. This kanji can be assigned a very good polish keyword "obecność", witch is even better than the english one (present), as there is no additional meaning of a gift. Heising makes it clear in the discription witch meaning of "present" he has in mind. But what if the situation was reversed and 現 would have the additional meaning of a gift? The english keyword would then be perfect and unless Heising tells us explicitly about it, there is no way to know that.
In addition (just to make things even worse) every word has its own connotations in a language that are obviously impossible to translate.
That's why I advice everyone to stick with the english language. You are very likely to get much better at english in the time it will take you to actually learn enough japanese to make any use of the Heising keywords, and by then most of the initial confusion will naturally go away . (ekhm - sorry for the discouraging thought - I honestly wish everyone to learn japanese)

obecność is presence. And with "obecny" you have the same problem as with "present". (Is it "obecny" as in "bieżący" or as in "będący w..."?)

So from what I read the most logical way of learning will be using english with some of the keyword translated to polish, keeping an eye on logical understanding of story is also essential to avoid confusion which meaning is the correct one.
Do you have any other advices coming from your experiences with this book, what would you advice to do or avoid?

My advise is: get over with it as fast as possible. Whatever works, even if imperfect, will save you time in the end. You can always pick up the correct meaning after you see a few words with the given character. I don't recall a single instance where a RTK keyword had caused me any difficulty in learning a compound containing it, although I'm sure it has happened at some point.
Learning vocabulary in my experience is a much stronger association and it will quickly replace whatever wrong impression you've had with the character.

Thank you for all your help. From last post I made a progress in learning, thanks to your advices I learnt 160 Kanji.
But I still have some questions (maybe they don't match the thread too much but I don't want to open new one).
I was doing reviews on my Anki app and on koohi site. I realised that I propably should stick to one, as the ammount of reviews will get higher and higher and it can give me some problems in the future. Which one should I choose - Anki or site?
If Anki is your preffered one I would also like to write about my problem with it. I learn 20 new kanji every day but Anki always gives me 3 or 4 cards more. When I learn cards from 140 - 160 Anki is always giving me cards 161-164. How can stop it from happening?

Anki jest zbudowane na algorytmie SM2, a SRS na koohii.com, z tego co mi wiadomo, jest oparte bardzo uproszczonej wersji kalkulowania czasu do następnej powtórki (raczej na pewno nie jest to algorytm SuperMemo). Czas który spędzasz na powtórki jest krótszy jeżeli używasz Anki.

Osobiście nie widzę powodu by ćwiczyć ten sam materiał i na koohii.com, i w Anki.

Nie dokładnie rozumię dlaczego Twoje Anki zachowuje się w sposób, który opisujesz. I bez znajomości Twoich ustawien w Anki trudno o jakąś konkretną odpowiedź.

Postanowiłem pozostać przy Anki na Android. Ustawienia są domyślne, nic w tej materii nie zmieniałem. Używam Heisigs RTK 6th Edition (najlepiej oceniana, pierwszy wynik jaki zobaczyłem - ma historyjki z koohi, kolejnosc kresek i czytania).

Mam jeszcze pytanie do rodaka Jakich materiałów do słownictwa, gramatyki itp polecasz? Zastanawiałem się ostatnio że dobrze byłoby robić też dla japońskiego coś poza RTK ale bez znajomości wszystkich Kanji jest troche ciężko skoro nie rozumiem zapisu danego słowa.
Zauważyłem że na forum głośno jest też o Core 2k,6k,10k deck, ale spotyka się to z mieszanymi opiniami.

Na stałe mieszkam w Austalii i nie mam łatwego dostępu do polskich pozycji traktujących j. japoński, więc moje rekomendacje niekoniecznie muszą być optymalne dla kogoś, kto może również wybierać z pozycji polsko-języcznych.

Pozycje opisujące gramatykę i język w sposób bardziej przystępny niż słowniki np.:
Colloquial Japanese 3rd edition, http://www.routledge.com/languages/collo.../japanese/ (używałem starszą wersję i pomimo tego, że używają romaji uważam, że jest ok)

Ludzie tu również rekomendują: Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese, Genki, Minna no Nihongo, Japanese the Manga Way, Making Sense of Japanese.
Z tych pozycji, tak naprawdę mogę mówić tylko o Minna no Nihongo. Ogólnie, jest to bardzo dobry podręcznik, ale bardziej do użytku w klasie niż samouczek.

• Dobry elektroniczny słownik. (Osobiście wolę mój Wordtank niż jakąkolwiek wersję słownika na telefon komórkowy.)

Kanji jest tylko jedną z poważnych trudności przy nauce j. japońskiego. Drugą taką trudnością jest stuktura zdań, która jest zupełnie inna od struktury zdań w językach indo-europejskich. Kiedy my mówimy:

To jest człowiek którego widziałem wczoraj.

Jeśli przetłumaczone na angielski, będzie:

This is a man whom I saw yesterday.

Ale po japońsku:

これは昨日私が見た人だ。(kore wa kinou watashi ga mita hito da.)

Zwróć uwagę jak z polskiego do angielskiego masz prawie 1:1 podstawienie słówek przy zachowaniu struktury zdania. (To 1:1, albo prawie 1:1, podstawienie słówek ma miejsce w większości j. europejskich).

W wersji japońkiej, część „私が見た人 (watashi ga mita hito)” używa innej struktury. W japońskim nie ma słowek typu „który”, bo w japońskim czasownik może modyfikować rzechownik (w bardzo podobny sposób jak przymiotnik modyfikuje rzeczownik w polskim lub angielskim). Ta z pozoru drobna różnica pomiędzy językami jest naprawdę czymś co zabiera trochę czasu by w pełni pojąć i być w stanie rozumieć/produkować w płynny sposób.

Trochę jeszcze nt. powyższego przykładu. 見た人 (mita hito) można przetłumaczyć na „widziany człowiek” albo „patrzący człowiek”. Które z tych dwóch znaczeń faktycznie będzie poprawnym tłumaczeniem, zależy od tego co jest przed 見た人 .

Jeżeli jest to 私を見た人 (watashi o mita hito), to tłumaczenie będzie „człowiek, który widział mnie”. Jeżeli jest to powyższe 私が見た人 – to mamy „człowiek, którego ja widziałem”.

A, i ostatni niuans w ramach przykładu „見た人” - 人 może być jakimkolwiek rzeczownikiem, ale może być również pełną frazą która jest typu „rzeczownikowego”, np. 黒い猫 (kuroi neko) „czarny kot”.

これは昨日私が見た黒い猫だ。 (kore wa kinou watashi ga mita kuroi neko da.)

Albo może coś bardziej złożonego (japoński stereotyp o Polakach znaleziony na internecie):
私が見たポーランドの人は、
ほとんどが真面目で勤勉な人たちで、へらへら愛想いいわけじゃないけど親切で、
とても好感の持てる人達でした。

Mam jeszcze pytanie co do sposobu nauki nowych znaków w tejże książce. Po przeczytaniu wstępu Heisiga o całej "imaginative memory" uczyłem się kanji przede wszystkim zapamiętując historyjki i z nich wybierając elementy do złożenia kanji, niektóre kanji były tak proste że nawet gdy dopiero zaczynałem opowiadać sobie historię - od razu mi się przypominał i mogłem go od razu zapisać. Mogłem ale nie robiłem ponieważ trzymałem się sposobu opisanego przez Heisiga. Niektóre ze znaków np. stone (wejście do jaskini pod klifem zablokowane przez kamień) czy petition (łąka, petycje składane głowie Oz'a) pozostawiły w mojej pamięci obrazy, które od razu po zobaczeniu keyword'a przychodzą mi na myśl.
Jednak dopiero na początku 11 rozdziału jest opis prawidłowej nauki - wyobrażania sobie obrazów łączących elementy znaków. Niestety nie korzystałem z tego sposobu do każdego znaku, do niektórych wydaje mi się to nawet awykonalne albo niepotrzebne - na przykład proste znaki jak little, cavity, trunk.
Powtórki robię codziennie i nie mam problemów z przypomnieniem sobie znaków bez obrazu stworzonego z historyjki, czy powinienem się tym martwić? Od tamtego momentu do każdego znaku kanji trzymam się zaleceń Heisiga z 11 rozdziału. Ale skoro dało radę przez ok. 100-150 znaków to jest się czym martwić, trzeba to wyobrażanie sobie stawiać na pierwszym miejscu?

Jakby to powiedzieć... Cała ta „heisigologia” to nic innego tylko system mnemoników oparty na przemyślanym i spójnym zestawie elementów bazalnych/podstawowych służący łatwemu pamiętaniu znaków. Heisig mówi, że pamięć wyobrażeniowa jest najsilniejsza i pewnie ma rację. Ale ostatecznym celem jest ten znaczek, więc czy ten cel osiągniesz przy pomocy obrazu, czy przy pomocy narracji, czy też żadna mnemotechika ne jest potrzebna powinno mieć mniejsze znaczenie. Z własnego doświadczenia widzę, że im znak jest mniej skomplikowany, tym mniejsza potrzeba na mnemotechnikę.

Zauważ zresztą, że sam Heisig nie jest kosekwentny w uporządkowaniu znaków w kolejności pozwalającej na zapamiętywanie wg zalecań z rozdziału 11 – np. do pamiętania znaków 四 czy 六 nie podał specjalnych historyjek.

W skrócie – nie widzę powodów be upierać się na „wyobrażaniu” sobie historyjki. Bardzo dobrze jest jeżeli obraz się pojawia, ale jeżeli znak jest prosty i masz trudności ze stworzeniem takiego obrazu...

Tak na marginesie, zgadzam się, że dla 小 historyjka może być nadmiarowa. Ale znaki 孔 i 胴, moim zdaniem, są zbyt złożone by sobie pozwolić na jej brak. Co się najprawdopodbniej będzie działo w Twoim przypadku, to to że gdy czas do powtórki będzie długi, będziesz zapominał te znaki częściej niż w gdybyś miał wypracowane historyjki.

Yes, there's several English keywords that I think he made up (I'm a native English speaker)... I suppose it's up to you if you have strong English and want to use the keywords a professional scholar devised or go with your own translations. I think that using your native language would have a lot to offer even if the keywords aren't perfect though. If you're not using your native language it seems like you lose a lot of the benefit - why not just use Japanese keywords instead of English?

This shouldn't happen. How are you adding new cards?

Heisig often doesn't clearly identify in what sense his keywords are. That's why Koohii's Sample Words feature (new as of April 2014!) is so great. It helps identify which sense Heisig intends his keyword for (not that it really matters when you graduate to learning compounds, as @unauthorized says).

So going to http://kanji.koohii.com/study/kanji/現 and clicking on "Sample words", I see that compounds using 現 include "ready money" as well as "now/current/present", but nothing about gifts.

Sometimes this fails. http://kanji.koohii.com/study/kanji/旺 has no sample words. It appears to mainly appear in names. Similarly, http://kanji.koohii.com/study/kanji/昭 is primarily a name kanji, and is the regnal name of Hirohito, who was emperor from 1926 through 1989, and is the father of the current emperor. I think embroidering a naked RTK keyword with this kind of background helps me remember it.

(Probably telling you what you already know but the 2200 jouyou kanji include apparently anachronistic kanji that are used in very specialized senses, i.e., trees, names, etc., and whose presence on the list are as much about politics and appearances than language functionality.)

You can learn them in english but in my opinion it will be better to use keywords that are more native to so use your own's language keywords. You brain would register faster that way since if you use a keywords that is in english your brain might still have to process it. But I do change the keywords sometimes like I have 2 mourning kanjis with mourning and mourning(alt.). When you take up real Japanese Vocabulary aqusition keywords wont be used as often and you dont have to recall everytime you see a japanese word. If your doing recognition that is Core 10k.

I'm a native german speaker but I bought the english version as well. The way I deal with words that I don't know is, I just learn them as well. It's a great way to increase my english vocab alongside learning japanese.

I was worried about that for a long time, as well. This is the method that works best for me at the moment: if I meet an English word that I'm unfamiliar with or a word that has multiple meanings, I look up its definition in an English dictionary. This is quite useful, since Heising tends to use old-fashioned meanings of words and pretty sophisticated expressions in general. Then, keeping the all of the different meanings of the keyword in mind, I look up the kanji in two or three dictionaries and look at the most common words and collocations that use that kanji. From that I try to get a general "feel" for the kanji itself and I'm usually able to connect that feel with one of the definitions that I'd looked up before that. I don't worry, about remembering any of the example words, since that's not important at this stage, but it helps to understand Heisig's reasoning behind his choice of keywords.
Having gone through all that, I'm able to construct a story (or choose one from those here at koohii) that is closest to the kanji's actual meaning and typical use, while still sticking to the keyword.
