Just looking through the awesome new study feature and saw that one of my stories was reported. I thought it might be a good idea to have a place to talk about why stories are reported. I had a story reported before that I removed because I realized my mistake. But this one I don`t know why?

Reported story: 1841 邸 Residence: City wall primitive ---> Superman

My defense: Superman works great for me for this primitive. Especially for kanji like 都 metropolis and 部 section. I see superman as a sort of metaphorical wall to protect the city.

So let me know what you think (even if you didn`t report it). As I decide whether or not I take it down. 3 people reported it so I will probably take it down but it makes me wonder if I am making some horrible mistake, or did they just think it was a lame personification?
Also, what stories do you have that are reported that you have questions about?

I think it's always good to hear what people use for certain primatives.

In this case, people probably reported the "story" for a lack of story.

EDIT: also if people don't get what you are getting at, there is the chance you'll get reported. However as the story area is kind of like brainstorming, I reckon the more ideas out there the better.

I think that sometimes stories get reported for arbitrary or misguided reasons. If there are more than two report votes, though, there is most likely a genuine problem.

Your intention -- to make a primitive more evocative -- is of course a good idea. There are some ideas on this web site which seem to have been adopted by many users, e.g. thread --> Spiderman.

But the example above is a logical jump. The connection between City Walls and Superman is not clear. In such a case it might be best to include your reasoning (which you've given here) in the story page.

I've seen that my only shared spanish story got reported twice. I used spanish because I found the story to be a really good mnemonic, but I wasn't able to translate it into english without meaning loss. If shared stories are required to be in english, I'll unshare it.

I've reported several stories acidentally, so I wouldn't rule out people accidentally pressing that button.

I was the third person to report this story. I think it would be great if we could include a reason why we reported a story so that others could make their own judgments about whether the report was justified or not.

I might have said, "Look ahead at the kanji that use this primitive and make sure this substitution will work for you. I had significant trouble with it."

I would feel bad if any of my own stories were reported, so I don't normally report stories, and this is the only one I have reported. I didn't want anyone to end up re-doing a bunch of stories like I did. Two other people had reported it, so I felt I wasn't alone in having problems with this substitution.

Perhaps I would have had a better time with it if the story had been "I see superman as a sort of metaphorical wall to protect the city." I can see some interesting possibilities with that that hadn't occurred to me before.

I can't take reporting seriously at all anymore. Sorry. My story about delighting in a lack of flying horses because they won't poop on your head if they're not there got reported...

Apparently for the use of the word poop. Yes, a truly awful thing to use in a story on a public site. I can see how someone might be offended by such an awful and hurtful word. <_<

So yeah, I can't take reporting seriously anymore. (And the story had 19 stars, too. LOL.)

I'd say more, but there's already been a lot of serious hashing out the usefulness of the reporting function in another thread.

I don't think that feature was ever meant to be that serious. It's just something that might be useful when the number of reports is significant. One or two have no meaning at all (call them 'statistical fluctuations'). Certainly not something to get upset about.

Didn't mean to come across as upset. Just amused and confused. Amused that someone would find that story offensive, and confused that someone would go to the effort of reporting it. But like I said, there's already a thread for hashing the reporting system out. It's not my site, and I appreciate ファブリス's hard work, so just consider it feedback.

It's quite possible someone hit report instead of star by accident. I've seen lots of stories that have 1 report and I haven't the slightest idea why anyone would report it.

Can't you cancel a reported story by reporting it again?

I've had one rather perverse story reported lots of times, but at the same time several people starred it. So is it better to listen to the prudes and hide the story or is it better to leave it if its useful to some people?

I know I've reported some on accident when using the iPhone browser since the buttons are close together with the star. I always unreported it right afterwards, but I see how it would be easy to do without noticing.

I only saw the 'check your reported stories' function today, and I laughed out loud for a good couple of minutes. These are now my favourite stories.

As story 1 I used 'interracial woman' as my primitive for the nebulous word 'inter' and to cement the idea of the character being about frost, rather than snow, cold, ice or all the other myriad possible confusions, i tied it in with Frosties, complete with Tony the Tiger. The interracial woman I imagine in my stories is the sexy girl Peter Petrelli got involved with in the early 1st season of 'Heroes'.

I can see why someone might find it offensive because they might think I am inciting humour at racially motivated breakfast cereal aided attacks, but I did not mean it in such a way. My niece who's picture graces my phone wallpaper is 'mixed race' as we say in England and a lot of my childhood friends are mixed race. I'm currently living in Nottingham were interracial relationships are so common it surprises Americans that come here to study. My Canadian buddy (a black guy) remarked 'I've never seen so many mulattoes(sic) before'. Anyway, to whoever took offence to my story it is not meant in a racist way.p.s. I do not condone the use of the word mullato, just quoting.

As for the second story... I can only imagine three scenarios of it causing possible offence (btw it got two stars aswell). I am aware that technically 'jihad' means struggle as in a spiritual struggle, so bashing someone on the head in the name of jihad is misconstruing the 'true' meaning of the word as the western media does with many arabic words, such as fatwa, which the western media uses as a byword for 'Islamic death threat', when it its 'true' meaning is a judicial ruling by a shiekh (Islamic scholar), so a fatwa could be an authorisation of a divorce, or a judicial ruling of any kind.
The other way it could possibly be offensive is if people sensitive to 9/11 thought it in someway trivialised the event by making Osama a boogeyman at the end of your bed.

Also referring to Osama as a cave dweller could have offended someone that knows better, that he doesn't live in caves, but rather he lives in an apartment block in lower Manhattan and is an active member of the Remembering the Kanji Website in his spare time.(just speculation)

I personally only report stories if they are very short (usually about 3 or 4 words) and contain absolutely NO primitives, or just one primitive when there are many, yeah, there actually are some of those around.

Ouch! the only one! Hey but thanks for telling me your reasoning. I wouldn't want others to re-do their stories either.
As was suggested, I added more to the story but I still wonder if I should just take it down. I also added a story for ENCLOSURE which I see as one of those kid superman tents. The other stories I used were more personal so I did not add them. For example I know some COUNTY firemen who everyone think are a bunch of superman but really they are bunch of fat old frat boys.
Anyway, I am especially interested to know what you think, Terhorst (or others that reported it). After the additions, do you still think I shold take it down now?

I agree wholeheartedly which is why I have not yet taken down my story. IMHO stories in spanish or french (etc.) should not be reported either as they help some people.

This is the million dollar question. rich and yawfosu's stories to me are not offensive (though the crazy bin laden is definately more borderline offensive). I personally feel it is better not to offend. As I have posted stories I always asked myself if I would feel comfortable telling my Mother (a prude) this story. If I wouldn't feel comfortable, I wouldn't post the story. But at the same time, I think the more ideas the better...

Sorry for the double post. I was thinking some more about this. So 3 reasons why people may be reporting are:

1. It's offensive
2. It's not helpful, it's problematic, or there is a mistake.
3. It's irrelevant. (ie, people who report stories in another language.)

So I was thinking, what if we had 3 choices on each story such as 1. star, 2. report, and 3. offensive? In time perhaps there could even be an option (for the prudes as Vosmiura put it) to hide offensive stories. It would be a sort of parental control the same way google images can block offensive images.
This sort of option may take care of some of these reporting problems?

For a while, I think people were reporting stories for what they saw as plagiarism. A few of my stories got reported I believe cause I re-wrote or used the basic idea of another person's story. (i even gave credit!).

I think the hold Idea to post a story is so that later someone will come along, see your idea, and either use it themselves or rework it to make it more personal, so I really can"t see why people would want to report it. (This has been argued to death, so I cant really see any reason to argue it here as well)

Terhorst's comment on this thread looks quite similar to what I was trying to say. After searching I also saw DrJones write something similar as well...

Odd that my story for "Exhaust" got reported three times (starred three times also). I thought mine was good as it closer to the actual connotation. I'm "assuming" it's getting reported because people think it should mean "exhausted" and the story should go along that lines.

In truth, I guess one could leave a comment that gets mailed to the contributor's inbox. Certainly if a comment gets mailed to me, I could either alleviate any misunderstanding or change my story to fix the problem or do nothing. Nothing is always an option.

I don't think it should be taken down. It may work well for another. I guess my intent was more along the lines of, "be careful."

Since the story has changed a lot, I've retracted my report. I can't judge whether the new story would have helped me or not, so I'll let others decide as they come along.


Also, contrary to what you might think, sometimes the next best thing someone could do after loving what you do is to hate it, and the worst is when just don't care. If I hadn't thought Superman had great potential, I wouldn't have tried it in the first place.

I try to keep an open mind; I didn't report that one because I assumed it was in some sparsely-vowelled Slavic language.

Just found the button that lets you see which of your stories has been reported and had a complete heart-attack as I saw it ran to 15 pages!

Then I realised it was actually only the first three stories and all the unreported stories were also showing below - much relief!
