J Light Novel Recommendations?

#1
I'm currently looking to dip into reading J novels in the summer mostly for fun.
Here's a few I thought would be quite interesting to read but am still looking for more to mostly cover that overseas shipping cost.

Do you have a kindle or android? You could just get them online and knock off that shipping cost.

If you're worried about shipping, try Honto.jp. Their shipping is a lot friendlier on the wallet for small amounts of books you don't need RIGHT NOW. If you can wait a week or two for either air mail or SAL, you can save a few bucks. Or try Kinokuniya's US stores if you're in the US.

(Or, yeah...Kindle.)

I recommend otsuichi, mori eto, and honda takayoshi, and 朱川湊人.

None of these authors are that hard. If Ihad to choose i'd say shugawa is the most challenging but it relal ydepends on the book. definitely try reading at least one book by otsuichi (preferrably one that won an award).

The books for the Ring are pretty good. they're kind of challenging though. Maybe save it for later. If you don't understand what's going on it's kind of boring to read lol. I personally had issues with the author's writing style (it's just boring lol ) which made reading sorta tediious and chore-y BUT the plot was so interesting I finished all 3 books. The story is really complex, sci-fi, interesting. the movies do not do justice to the books. I hope the movies don't deter people from reading the books because it's so different from the movie.

confessions by kanae minato was really engaging to read for me. I would say only read it if you found the movie interesting. It's not a pleasant book to read but I deifnitely recommend it to anyone who watched the movie and is interested. there's more informtaion and monologue in the book that they couldn't squeeze into the movie since a movie is a movie and not a book and it'll boring as hell if people just talk endlessly.

Definitely check to see to see if you're near a kurokuniya or book-off. I was able to read all these authors that I mentioned because of book-off I think I bought 99% of them from the $1 section (it was 50 cents at one point because of a promotion. SCORE!)

Call me weird, but I prefer to read books in paper format and rather feel the texture of dead wood.

As for novels themselves, I've picked up 11 different books to buy and will soon place an order this weekend. Doing few searches in the Pixiv Comic section for popular items net me quite a bit and should last me more than enough for summer reading.

If I was doing it all again I would probably choose 時をかける少女 by 筒井 康隆 as my first 'full length' novel. There is a special easy-to-read version (with extra furigana) which is probably a good idea (or you can just read it on Kindle with dictionary lookup but less furigana).

I might read a few of 乙一's short stories first as a warm-up. Again, there are easy-to-read versions available.
