I am going to start learning Arabic and publish the results on my blog. Has anyone on here learnt Arabic, and if they have could they reccomend any good books?

Here in Israel we are obliged to take is through junior high school up to the 10th grade (there's also an option to extend it).
I took it for several years and found it quite easy since it is very similar to Hebrew.
I remember the book named "allorah alarabia" (the Arabic language).
I will have to take a look about the author though.
If you have a background in Semitic languages this could be easier for you.

I recommend Michel Thomas for Arabic, as the best way to start!
One thing you have to define is what variety of Arabic you want to learn. Modern Standard Arabic (Fusha) is the official Arabic that's on the news, books, etc, but virtually no one speaks it. Each country (or region) speaks its own dialect, and Egyptian Arabic is the most widely comprehended, because the Egyptian film and music industries are huge within the Arabic world. Michel Thomas teaches Egyptian Arabic.
Therefore, if you want to focus on reading and things like that, go for MSA (Fusha). If you want to focus on talking to people (in person or chat), watching movies, listening to music, choose a dialect (Egyptian is a good call) and make native friends online!
The bad thing is that there are not a lot of resources to learn dialects, while there's a lot for MSA... so making friends and using Italki would be a good thing. Regarding grammar and those things, dialects are way easier to learn.

Being Iraqi I speak Arabic 
There is a world of a difference between fus'ha and a dialect so watch out for that. The reading is phonic like in English but it's a giant pain in the ass. Most people would tell you to learn the Egypt dialect but if you ask me Lebanon is the best country. It's very beautiful and the people are gorgeous.
When it comes to food i would highly recommend hummus, waraq i'nab,beryani, and koosa mahshi. But seriously, lebanon is your best choice.
