Problem with the meaning of words

#1
Hey, these days learning the reading of an vocabulary is very fast. I think that I only spend like 30 minutes for my 30 new words a day to learn the reading. (I think that it gets easier the more vocabulary you know)
But I have a problem to retain the meaning, translation of the words.
Most of the time I can recall the reading but not the meaning.
In the past it was the opposite. I knew the meaning most of the time but not the reading.
Has anyone else this problem?

Hey, same thing for me Wink I try to focus on the positive side: We're getting better at knowing and guessing readings! Yay!

Meaning can sometimes be guessed from the context of from the kanji keyword... Plus, it's sometimes tricky to associate a "meaning" to a word. You'd also have to learn its usage, its collocations etc. So you might learn them better by reading novels anyway! Anyway, that's what I think about when I realize I'm better at readings than meanings Smile

Honestly I don't think it's a problem. Except in rare cases I think I've always learned words in two steps: first either the meaning or the reading, then the other later on. For frequent readings it's logical you'd know the reading first, since the semantic connection between two kanji in a compound isn't always obvious.

Also your problem seems to stem from doing recognition. If you also do some production it'll happen less (since it'll train you to remember the meaning).

How are you studying?
In any case - study in context. Learning that a certain word means something within a given context is easier than learning what it means in isolation. And possibly more useful, I think.
