I felt that yesterday when I finished 19Kanjis and 2 prim. ele.s in 1 hour, they are the first 19 kanjis in Part 2 (where you have to make the vivid image yourself), I felt high confidence, awesome!!

YAY 577!!

Feels nice to have reached my first "milestone", kinda. I've done 577 in ~1,5 week now (started on Jan. 27th). My goal is to "finish" RTK1 by the end of the month (most of the "remembering" part is done through reviewing though ^_^), with the "optimal" pace of around 50 kanjis per day (I do it in lessons, and depending on the lengths of the lesson(s) I do 1-3 lessons per day).
Kinda feels like I'm rushing though, but I do have over 50% retention most of the time (The only exeption was yesterday.. Wanted to break the 500 mark during the weekend (was at 350~ on Friday), but I spent all Saturday doing something else instead, making me do 150~ kanji in one day).
Some of the kanjis I've gone through I already knew, and before starting RTK I was randomly browsing the kanji primitives, so I knew quite a few of those too from before.

this thread celebrates:

500 frames any pile?
or 500 frames in the "4 or more reviews"-pile?

hmmm? no answers at all?

well, I have 500 frames running in the reviews.
I will get back to this thread when my first 500 have reached the 4th pile. :-)

From the join and post dates on the first post I'd imagine it's celebrating 500 in any; and unless you review piles early (pointless), at a decent pace you could be through the book before having 500 in the last pile.

Working on lesson 23 and going on 700 right now after 1.5 weeks. My biggest problem seems to be forgetting a few "easy" kanji because the English keyword is outside my usual vocabulary (I'm Finnish) and I get hung up on the keyword rather than trying to form an image I can associate it with. Some primitive placement issues here and there. ~80% retention rate most of the time.

I keep wishing I'd found RvTK sooner. Great site, great community (even if I just lurk on the forums myself). When I initially registered and took a look at the review UI I thought I'd rather just use Anki and went back to my deck for a while, but thankfully the story/hint sharing changed my mind.

Well, after clearing my review and failed stacks, and adding some more kanji, I'm now at 522 in green stacks. But I don't think I deserve to "roar" just yet, because almost 120 of them are in the "reviewed once" pile, and I doubt I really know more than about 30 of those. So I'll see if I can whittle that pile down in a few days by just reviewing, without adding more kanji.

I fell behind a bit and I'm only at 425, so maybe I shouldn't even be here at this moment until I get cracking on and get the rest done. Nearly there though. Then I can say "hoorah 1/4 through!"

Whew, I am finally at 508...though, I left reviewing off for two weeks and came back to a stack of unreviewed kanji....of which I missed maybe 25%. Sigh. In short, no celebrations here.

But, it feels really nice to come to this milestone. I started studying in late December and made it my new years resolution to do roughly 3000 by mid-year.

I just reached 500 (again yesterday). I did up to just past 900 over Winter break last year, but when school started back up I had to focus on that, I ended up resetting and starting the book over at the beginning of Feb. Wish I could go faster than I am now (about 20 a day), but I have to focus until I graduate, only 13 weeks left =]

I just added number 500. Began mid-January and have been averaging 10 kanji per day while also working full-time.

I'm doing this during my morning and evening commute, so about 95% is on the iPhone. Luckily the mobile signal is pretty strong and steady on my train route.

No problem with motivation so far. I only wish I'd started sooner -- years sooner!

FWIW I am using song lyrics -- English song lyrics -- as much as possible to provide a "hook" from the keyword. I find this helps me a lot to avoid the "my mind is blank" phenomenon during keyword reviews.

also reached 500 today, but like many, not happy with the progress. working on it about a month now. little bit more than. but i wish i could do three times as many as im doing now.

There are a couple reasons why it took me a bit more than 3 months to arrive at 50%:
- I started a bit too slow, but then I found this site Smile
- the birth of my daughter took away a lot of energy, time and motivation
- sometimes trying to do a bit too much in a short time frame
- the previous resulting in huge review and failed piles that I didn't want to do (shame on me)
- head aches of being a whole day behind my computer at work :p that's what you get for being an IT programmer... (I should look for another job, that has hardly anything to do with computers... sigh)

So, now it's going okay, not really fast, but it just advances as long as I have enough stories made up/looked up for the new Kanji. So that's about 20 or 30 a day. The last two or three weeks I started hacking my way through those failed ones bit by bit, always doing my reviews first thing in the morning (one of the best rules I gave myself), mostly followed by going through the failed ones after that. When there's some time during noon or afternoon, I start making stories or learning a couple new kanji.

Keep on going boys 'n girls! Smile

Choosing family over kanji study? Tisk Tisk. The younger generation is confusing its priorities. Will be expecting to read a lot of baby antidotes in your stories!

Reached 508 today, and very happy about it!

I'm not going terribly fast (around 2 months to get this far), but I'm enjoying the steady progress.

Actually, I made a Google Spreadsheet with a graph of # kanji learned over time, and special goal lines at 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500 and 2042. Every time I add a few kanji to the system, I put my new total against that date, and the little line keeps snaking up the graph.

Anyway - compared to the rest of you 508 is nothing, but since this thread exists, I decided I'd post when I got this far. I guess that's the kind of little goal that keeps us going!

A bout of seasonal illness (curse you, air conditioned office), and my laziness had set me back, but now I have finally added 508 into the first pile and with part 2 out of the way, and less than a hundred pages to the half way mark, i feel even now the goal is within reach. 2 weeks off work coming up soon will mean I can go hardcore and really push the boat out further and get as many down as I can. So far I have had times when I really felt I couldn't make some Kanji stick, especially those cloud based ones... But I really have discovered that sticking it out and carrying on really works and I hope both myself and everyone here can keep up the momentum and will to conquer the Kanji mountain. (Or final base camp if you want the summit of RtK 3 though eh)?

The way to go!
The next 500 will give you good grasp of how the mnemonics work for you and how to make the stories stick. After that the remaining 1000 (plus a few more) will be a breeze! Smile

Congrats everybody!

Took my sweet time with that blasted 130-kanji Lesson 23, with all those fingers and hands and elbows and goodness knows what other appendages. Part of the reason I took my time is that I'm trying to keep Box 2 at no more than about 10% of my total kanji entered. Now Lesson 23 is finally behind me, and I have 766 cards entered. I am almost feeling like a good ROAR at this point.

We were warned by those ahead of us that it begins to get hard right about now, as reviews start to pile up etc. But keep chipping away at it, it does add up little by little. I must also thank those who are sharing stories, the ones I make up generally suck and so I don't share them but I rely on good stories from others, usually with slight tweaks that I make. My favorites so far are (for 肪) "Yo momma so obese, she make the moon change direction!" and (for 銃) that a gun is just something that lines up bits of metal and allots them to people -- One for you! (bang!) And one for you! (bang!) And one for you! (bang!) Smile

Looking forward to seeing you all on the other side of 1021!

Hmm, why didn't I think of that before Big Grin I'll try making some baby stories now Smile

Anyway, you've got quite a lot of stories (also from other people) that already helped me a lot. So, actually, you (and the others) helped me already by giving me more time for my family Wink I need less time for making them up myself etc... but hey, that's why this site is for!

And more on topic: Congrats for the new milestones Smile

I just hit part III in RTK1 this morning.

And is it me? Or is it a lot more fun learning the kanji with one's own imagination? And easier? I'm having a blast, and being as ridiculously silly as possible.

I know they say not to give yourself a time limit, but I want to have this book done in 1.5 months... Before my attention span dwindles to zippo. It's good to know I have company on this forum.

Got to 550 today. Doesn't really feel I accomplished anything, though. I'm just waiting till I get to 1000, now that's a much nicer number :p

I'm so anxious to get to 1000. I'm at 737 as of today. I'm really busy in school right now, and so I'm only adding 10 a day. Hopefully, after the paper and mid-term I'm about to suffer through are finished, i can't start adding at normal pace (25-30 a day).

皆さん、頑張ってよ!

I'm at the start of lesson 23 now (The really big one) but that means I am at the '1st halfway point' (by means of pages anyway). Not too long to the 1021 mark now.
