Good books translated to Japanese

#1
I'm looking to read a couple good books translated into Japanese from English. Yeah, it's a little backward but whatever it takes to get me literate. I know from studying other languages that reading something translated from English is generally a lot easier and obviously way more so if I've already read it. But aside from Harry Potter I have no idea what's available.

A lot of books are translated from English lol. Be a bit more specific? What genre are you looking for?

Try searching on honto.jp or amazon.co.jp for book titles that you'd like to read. Chances are there's a Japanese translation, especially if the book is popular.
Personally I own translations of the The Hunger Games and Twilight (I know, I know...).
I'm planning on going to Kunikoniya this weekend and am hoping to find copies of World War Z and Lords of Salem, even though I know full well that WWZ is going to be a doozy due to the military terminology used.
There also seem to be some Japanese books based on American TV shows and movies. American Horror Story, AHS: Asylum and Pacific Rim were a few books floating around honto that I found.

One of the first books I read in Japanese was a translation of Roald Dahl's Matilda, haha.

Philip K Dick is available on the Kindle, translated into Japanese. I have a copy of アンドロイドは電気羊の夢を見るか? which in case you are not a fan, is the book that Bladerunner was based on, although it is quite different in many ways.

I haven't read it yet so I can't comment on whether it is a good book to try and read in Japanese. I read it in English years ago and found it be a quick, easy and enjoyable read, but based on the first few pages of the Japanese version I didn't get that impression. But I will try it again sometime.

If you don't know Philip K Dick, you should probably try to read some of his stuff in English first to see if you like it. Some of his stories are very short so it wouldn't take long. He can be a bit weird.

I wanna read The Dark Tower by Stephen King, but the Japanese books are not "kidle-ized" yet.

Pretty much anything famous will have been translated. I was in Tsutaya today, and it the front new release section they had the new Dan Brown, not a recommendation. I personally own Heart of Darkness, Paradise Lost, Hamlet, The Old Man and the Sea (Hemingway is pretty big here for some reason), The Scarlet Letter, and Catcher in the Rye.

So basically, it comes down to what do you want to read?

I'd say Hemingway is popular in Japan due to his minimalist writing style, but that's just a guess.

Other than that, I can only echo that pretty much anything in the canon and most popular contemporary books will be available in translation.
