Transferring RTK kanji to vocab learning question ????

#1
So if I am done with RTK 1(still on F.746) and go to vocab learning I would try the Core series.... 2000....6000 ,,,,10000 using anki.

My question would be that when learning vocab do we still have to make stories again? If thats not the case I am curios on how those who has finished RTK1 or RTK 1 and 3 learn their vocab.

Another one would be if it would be nessesary to learn RTK 3 when I am just aiming a Japanese level where I can read galges(visual novel) on psp/psvita?

Thx in advance.

No, you don't have to make stories again. Imo about 80% of the vocab you'll learn is very intuitive once you've learned kanji with RTK (for example 応募 application, 飲食 food and drink). Now for the other 20% whose meaning you can't infer easily, I guess you can make stories but most people probably learn them through encountering them in context (like me).

RTK3 should always be a low priority in studying. I'm not a VN reader but I doubt all of the RTK3 kanji are necessary to read any, the jouyou are.

Please don't forget doing also some grammar!
Try at least to cover the basic (what particles are, how verbs and adjective works)... Maybe you're already doing this, but I wanted to be sure :-)

About vocab: I used memrise for a while and there I found all kinds of stories/mnemonics, but unless I'm stuck with a specific word I've never had to use this kind of things to learn vocabulary. It helps if you get a lot of Japanese input (not just the anki cards, but also songs, sentences, podcasts, graded readers...) and try to produce some output yourself ("Oh, I've just learned the word for 'apple'! Let's try: 'the apple is red', 'I like apples').

YMMV, but I think at the beginning you should just try to see if hearing words a few times is enough for you. Only then, if it doesn't work, try to put some mnemonics into it.

Uh, I forgot about RTK3.
I'm still doing RTK1 (I've been studying Japanese for a while, but I've decided to do a big boost to my kanji knowledge just recently)... frame number should be somewhere above 800.

I'm liking RTK1 a lot and will probably do RTK3 mostly because of that. I'm already doing vocab and grammar, and will continue to do so... I'll try to lower my frames/day rate when I'll get into RTK3 to have more time for other Japanese-related things. Also, while I'm not skipping any of the RTK1 kanji, I figure I'll probably skip some of the RTK3 ones.

If you're starting Vocabulary now, wait before doing RTK3 until you're sure it won't slow your study of vocab/grammar. It really is low priority... If you do it, do it for fun like I will (and not at the expenses of something else).

Thx 4 all the input.

Im glad to hear that when learning much vocab I wont have to remake stories too much. Also I have read a lot of japanese computer visual novels priorly so grammar has been engraved to my brain and many Japanese sounds too.Well it was using the help of translation software (ITH,ATLAS,TA). Well @Ephel actually this kanji learning has taken up most from my japanese free time of visual novels and anime(only got an hour to do j'pan stuff a day).Well I am also looking forward to reading Infinite Stratos 2 on the PSVITA so its like motivation....Ill decided also to take up RTK3

Like EratiK said, a good amount of vocabulary can be understood just by the kanji they contain. Using the kanji as a visual cue and the context makes recalling the reading of the word a tad easier. I always write down new words on a piece of paper like this:
kanji --- reading --- meaning and brute force them until I know them inside and out (credit to Xanpakuto for the idea).

If you want to get your level up as quickly as possible I would put RTK 3 on hold. Actually studying the language via textbooks, grammar guides, core etc will be a much better investment of your time if you want to read visual novels as quickly as possible. Would I say RTK 3 is necessary? Probably not. But if you enjoy doing RTK, and don't mind putting off your goals for a little while go for it.
