My questions about SRS with RTK(pls help!)

#1
So I've been following the advise of not reviewing or even looking at kanji which are fresh from my memory. I isolate my self from the kanji I have learnt since if I see or recall then that would defeat the purpose of SRS. But ive been not remembering some kanji from this way (8/35 not remembered in my Due deck) but if I quick study(just looking at the kanji and reading the story) im pretty sure I can get all remembered.

Why? I read this quote from the Learn more section of RTK site

If you review cards ahead of time, you are encouraging your memory to store the information in short term memory instead of long term memory, thus defeating the purpose of the review scheduling.

So my question would be...

Can I still quick study all the kanji that I have learnt in the Detailed flashcard list or should I continue my routine?
If my ways are wrong is there any ways that you recommend?

Thx

There are no "wrong" or "right" ways to do it, just do what works for you.

If you want to review kanjis ahead of time, I would advise using anki, which has an option that allows you to cram ahead, but without rescheduling the cards based on your answers. That way, you can still review whatever selection of card you want whenever you want without messing up the SRS scheduling. The best of both worlds really.

I would advise you do it if you feel like it - i.e. if you are having a hard time with a particular batch of kanjis (like the "thread" primitives for instance). It does help, and as long as you don't reschedule the cards, it's pretty much only beneficial.

- Good luck !

You can also do so on Reviewing the Kanji's "Labs" page fyi, it's called Free Review mode. As well as repeat lessons on the Progress page (which is the same Free Review mode, just picks all kanji from any given lesson for convenience). While doing so you can press "S" key to edit/update/read your stories.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that feature, my bad. It actually sounds more convenient than anki, which makes the creation of any custom batch of card for reviewing a real pain in the a**...

Np, the website ought to be better structured (something I have to work on) and I know some users may not realize the options are there, so I post a little reminder now and then Smile

I must admit not using RevTK for reviewing, since I'm on the go rather often, having anki available on multiple devices when offline is a blessing, but I guess that comes at the price of user-friendliness :p

Anyways, I'll stop hijacking this topic :>

You're honestly worrying that more exposure is going to hurt your language studies? The more you see this stuff, the more chances your brain has to play with and manipulate it, the more cases you see it in, the better. If you have the time and energy to do some extra studying, definitely go for it.

Sorry I didn't actually address your question in previous post. It sounds like you aren't too far off in RTK? I started using spaced repetitions when I was 3/4 through the book and wanted to make sure I was reviewing everything.

Depending how well you remember, you can actually go a long way just doing daily free (non SRS) reviews of what you learned in previous days, and then one big review of all the characters you learned so far on weekends (as an example).

The SRS is there to help you memorize a large number of items in the medium/long term. When you are just learning them don't sweat it, you can expose yourself to whatever you already added to the SRS, or skip the SRS altogether.

You'll want to start using the SRS as a primary way of review when you have 1000+ characters because at that point your time is getting limited so even if you wanted you can't review everything everyday. I mean taking the logic to the extreme, think about it, if you had the time there is nothing wrong with reviewing 2000+ characters per day. Only it takes a ton of time and it's very inefficient.

Sooo. Don't sweat it, decide to use the SRS or not. If you're going to use it, do as many "free" reviews (cramming) as you like that you are comfortable with remembering. Just focus those free reviews on the characters you learned recently. When they appear in the SRS it's ok, the SRS will take care of surprising you with the same character(s) weeks later and at that point if you forgot to review it or your mnemonic was weak, you "fail" it and it's review cycle will reset.

TLDR The spaced repetition scheduling takes care of however you expose yourself to the characters.

Thx a lot! Your answer has cleared my doubts. I used to do cramming most of the times when I do quizzes or test then after a day or three then that information would leave me most of the time(dont want that to happen in kanji learning alright=D).
