Hi there, I have neither a Paperwhite 2 nor this dictionary http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AKIUDAY/, but I'm thinking of getting both.

Two daft questions from a very technically challenged guy:

1. Can I purchase this dictionary with a German Amazon account and use it on a Kindle Paperwhite bought in Germany?

2. Can I use this dictionary on a KP2 exactly as I use Rikaichan (not -sama) on a browser? (i.e. "touching" a selectable word on the Kindle will have the same effect as hovering over a word with the pointer on a browser, and the search will be based on the EDICT database)

I'm sorry if it seems too basic! I did search old threads, but there were only some references, and I don't want to take for granted something that'll be my main and only reason for making this investment.

1. Yes.
2. The "maker"(well the guy who ported this to the Kindle) of this dictionary occasionally posts on here, so he might answer better than I do. I don't have this J-E dictionary, but all dictionaries function the same way on the Kindle and I use a few ones in a few different languages lol. If the document you're reading is properly formatted, then selecting a word is going to be either
- super easy: you click anywhere in a word and it automatically selects the entire word, then it shows you the definition/translation. Somehow seems to work only with ebooks from Amazon (including free ones) (I looked at CSS info and couldn't yet figure out how they do this... Hopefully someone does! It's really nice when it works!)
- easy: you have to select yourself from where to where it constitutes a word and then dictionary pops up. Works with properly tagged ebooks (ie. you specified that the document's language is Japanese).
- impossible: your document isn't tagged as Japanese and thus no dictionary pop-up is going to happen at all.

In any case, since it's e-ink and it has to refresh and you're selecting with your finger, it's not as easy and fast as rikaichan, but still useful. Also the parsing might be a little bit more difficult if dealing with non-Amazon content (unless you're a genius or find a genius' instructions! Maybe it's just me who's an idiot though lol!)

Hi comeauch, that is very helpful, thank you. Looks perfect. I guess that negative point doesn't really apply if you're an advanced learner. I am only left wondering if it's possible to tag as 'Japanese' a book that you yourself converted from txt to Kindle format...

I'd also like to point out that since your original post I have uploaded a brand new version of the dictionary. It now has an extra 10,000 entries. But more importantly it now lists all entries with the same reading (technically all glosses of an entry) in one block, ordered by usage frequency. I've uploaded some images to the amazon listing to show this:

PS If you have already purchased the dictionary from amazon, I believe that it is possible for you to get the latest version. To do this you just need to email Amazon and request the newest version. (another way is to delete the book from your Kindle and re-download it, though I have not tried this myself)
