can't you find people in real life like at your college? Maybe next semester if you guys are all taking finals right now. if you're serious then you're better off asking on lang-8 or some japanese website...

Are there Japanese exchange or international students at your university? Most of them are probably desperate for an American friend.

You can find them at Japanese cultural club meetings or in your classes. Just sit next to one and make up an excuse to start a conversation, e.g. ask for notes, talk about the class or the professor, ask whether they've taken a class in the subject, or let them pick up something you dropped then say "Thanks, by the way, I'm [name]. Nice to meet you." Ask about their background (major, hometown, etc.), then make plans to meet outside class. I recommend American things. Just ask something like, "Have you gone bowling before?" or "Have you been to a hookah bar?" (for some reason Japanese students are enchanted by hookah and, to a lesser extent, gun ranges ... I often see pictures on Facebook). Most likely they'll be thrilled.

I know it sounds nice to have support and a companion to study alongside, but you'll learn Japanese faster (and probably gain more motivation) if you make Japanese friends instead.

Edit: I don't recommend the gun range for the first time you meet up, unless things really kick off and the person seems into trying out new, exciting things. Otherwise, it'll just be really creepy. I realize this may be glaringly obvious, but I'll just err on the side of caution.

For what it's worth this question gets asked over and over by both sides.
