After a year, I returned to duoLingo and have enjoyed the new format for the last week. I've completed 7 units and added all the vocabulary and grammar words listed for those units into an Anki deck that seems very useful. While that process has likely added twice the time I could have spent studying, it already has proven useful in retaining vocabulary. Plus, I wanted a product I could share to the widest audience.

Ok, why mention that here? DuoLingo already has an incubator program to develop an English course for Japanese speakers. They only have 3 translators at the moment, but are looking for more people knowledgeable in both languages so that could be a useful outlet for member's Japanese skill from here. After the initial phase I assume they'll still have need for people to moderate students that will begin to join and being that those students will be Japanese this should also be useful for forum members.

In addition, I think they may develop a program to teach Japanese for English speakers. That project I assume will need a lot of work and I hope they draw upon the things we've learned over the last 10 years on the forums and other locations. What I hope does not happen is trying to jam Japanese into a lesson format designed for learning Romance languages (I'm looking at you Rosetta Stone). Perhaps if quality people that join their English for Japanese speakers program originate from here then they'll likely take our advice with regards to teaching Japanese online as well.
