Many people who know me professionally have been mortified by the stuff I get up to - taxing drug dealers in night club toilets, brawling with gangsters in the middle of a street, refusing to press charges after having my jaw stamped on, associating with people with criminal records etc, etc.

I remember a year or so ago I posted about women and I was shocked by what I perceived as Fillanzea's lack of tolerance.

One thing which disgusts me personally is meat - I feel tears when I walk past a butcher's shop and love animals, but I tolerate meat eaters however disgusted I am by their actions.


How liberal is everyone else when it comes to tolerance, and where do you draw personal boundaries?

I can't tolerate people that are different than me. This includes such things as, but not limited to: Religion, Politics, Morals, Nationality, Marriage, Sexual preference, Soda preference, Favorite color, Lack of a penis.

I think I tolerate pretty much everything except for intolerance. And actions that directly hurt other people in some way, even more so when the offender doesn't gain anything from it.

Unfortunately, these two simple (reasonable?) boundaries cause me to be "intolerant" way more often than I'd like.

I'm fairly intolerant of what I perceive as harmful stupidity. Like, if my Facebook friends post 'vaccines are a money-making conspiracy by the drug companies'/'vaccines cause autism' type of bullshit, it's really hard for me not to tell them to shut the ***** up. So that's usually what I do.

I'm fairly tolerant of most things and people. I'm even fairly tolerant of other people's intolerance. Only exception being people who misrepresent science.

I read through the above link to the Basic Laws of Stupidity and it was really interesting. Is it meant to be taken seriously or as a joke?

Personally, I'm intolerant of people that misrepresent the truth, intentionally or unintentionally and do not admit when they are wrong. Obviously I'm not the infallible decider of truth and if someone supports their opinion with logic, I'll listen to them and be open to it. It's when others refuse to listen to or even acknowledge different viewpoints that annoys me.

I try to be as tolerant as I can, but intolerant people just really bother me. Also, I have very little patience for bad driving; unfortunately, living in the US, I have to deal with bad driving all the time. Why couldn't they have invested more in railways than super highways? That might get me out of at least some driving.

I try to be tolerant about things people do that don't affect others. If what you do affects others in a negative way, I will become intolerant.

My criteria is: every person is free to do whatever the hell she want to do with herself, everything is cool EXCEPT those things that would unjustly harm others, including but not limited to: all sorts of discrimination, stealing, bullying, violence against people and animals, disrespect toward people and society, cheating, etc. you get the idea.

Now I might tolerate something that fall into those categories, but it would probably be a little harmful. Three things that I definitely won't tolerate are discrimination, violence and cheating.

I believe that people who are intolerant to other people's personal preferences are insecure.

With people I try to be open-minded. If I find something truly grotesque, I try to remain curious.

I once had a violin teacher that said students should feel offended, or "taken aback" by wrong notes. This never really stuck with me though.

I'm also a hypocrite when it comes to racists, homophobes and anti-feminists, since while I do honestly believe that it's not the average Joe's fault that he is following the basic flawed guidelines of whatever society currently considers normal, damn they make me sad. And then I annoy them when I start telling them that it's not their fault they're sexist any more than it was the slave owner's fault that he abused his slaves, and they get offended since I compared them to a slave owner and I start explaining how I might be slightly offended by their remark, and then it all goes downhill. Sometimes, just sometimes, if I've had enough to drink, I genuinely start explaining how their hostility to minority rights is just one big semmelweis reflex and how noticing is the first step to fixing, and maybe even bother explaining how geworfenheit&the cycle of poverty works and why poor people turn to crime, how being a gypsy isn't a post hoc ergo propter hoc into that lifestyle, that sort of stuff... and that's about the time that people stop listening. It's much easier to just gang up on me waiting for me to say something man-hating. And that makes me sad

I couldn't think of anything to write in this thread but the other Christianity thread just made me realise. I'm completely intolerant of religion and basically won't even talk to people about it (though maybe a bit on this forum or whatever).

I was chatting to my parents about this a while back and they asked me that, if I had kids, would I prefer for them to become christians or to be gay*. I actually realised I'd probably rather they were gay, because thats a biological choice so at least I could understand why they are the way they are. If they wanted to talk to me about Jesus everytime I spoke with them it would quickly become a massive problem.

* Just to add, I've nothing against gay people at all so hope that didn't sound too negative. But if I could choice before hand whether my own kids would be straight or gay, I think society is easier on straight people and life would be more comfortable for them that way. I don't care much otherwise.

I don't think that makes you intolerant to religion though. I do follow a religion, but when someone constantly talks about it starts to become annoying. The only times I really want to hear it are if I'm at church or if I'm having a deep discussion about religion with friends. In a similar vein, atheists who constantly bring up their non-faith in a similar fashion are annoying.

It sounds like you're intolerant of people trying to convert you constantly, or people who have nothing to talk about other than their religion. If someone is constantly talking about Jesus to you, that's probably what they're doing.

My tolerance ends at the tip of my nose. I don't want people to think that their actions don't have repercussions when they involve me or my group. There will be consequences, of one sort or another.

As for the exchange of opinions, I generally avoid it when it comes to Certain Topics, like politics, religion, or sex and everything that goes along with it. I will exchange opinions and discuss it only with people I like or trust on a deep level, or people whose opinions and thoughts I really want to hear, because I think they're intelligent or thoughtful. Otherwise, I keep it polite and do not stray into conversational minefields.

It's not personal, it's just that most of the time, exchanging political views with strangers is a really lousy way to make friends, IMO. Some of my best friends are extremists of all kinds, from conservatives to liberals to libertarians, to people into all kinds of unexpected stuff, but it's all cool. If all of my friends shared the same views as me, it would be boring as hell. But they became friends with me because we shared interests outside of Certain Topics, and that's important, too.

I do have one pet peeve: generalizations of any kind. Whenever I hear "All X are Y," I get irked. I generally reply with "There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who make broad, sweeping generalizations, and those who don't." I try very hard to remain in the latter group.

No I hate it for lots of reasons, even those that don't affect me directly or indirectly. If I was ever made King of the world I'd do my upmost to knock down every place of worship and every church and destroy every religion I possibly could.

I tend to tolerate a lot of stuff because its the internet. You're going to hear a lot of people's opinions whether you like it or not.

I am also gifted the internet super-power of being able to tell when someone is being sarcastic... That, or just trying to ruffle some feathers with purposely inflammatory remarks. The 'edgy' ones, so to speak. Some people feed off the negative energy and I don't lose any sleep by skipping over them.

What gets me is the ones with conviction. The ones who seem to have convinced themselves that their horrible ideas are somehow the most logical and reasonable...

Like Reddit's creepy fixation over the issue of hitting women. They seriously love that one. Its strange. They're always just coming up with these fantasy scenarios where its justified. Seems more and more like they literally think the splitting image of an egalitarian utopia is a world where you are able to punch out a woman for giving you lip without anyone batting an eye...

I don't have a natural affinity to feminism, but sometimes the people on the other side tend to make me MORE inclined towards it. Is there a term for that? Joining up with one side of an argument after seeing how much of an ass-face the person of the opposition is being? There really should be.

I'm fairly leftist (probably enough to piss you off?), but this reminds me that one thing that I don't like is what I call 'ignorant progressivism.' A lot of progressives and others on the left like to adopt pet causes that aren't really based on reality. Probably the most annoying of these is all the food movements recently--people who only eat organic food, or are against genetically modified crops, stuff like that.

I've honestly never noticed that with Reddit.

The front page of Reddit and any major subreddits are basically now completely filled with idiots and I've unsubscribed from all of them. In the slightly smaller ones there are far more interesting people who don't say quite so many stupid things.

Yeah they usually aren't that bad, its just sometimes you get some post that was upvoted because you know it appeals to the _____ crowd, and that's when you know they'll be showing up in droves and you'll hear some pretty opinionated things. Like on /r/videos a while back there was this video of a man and a woman in some argument where she hit him first and then he retaliated. It was the one where they were in some restaurant doorway and he broke the glass. Everyone's reaction was like "Wow! What a hero!"

I am relatively well known around Liverpool for supporting freedom of speech and regularly go to fascist rallies to support freedom of speech even though I hate what they are saying. I have been assaulted by about 5 radical Feminists at one of these rallies. I am often attacked physically on the street in Liverpool for my support of freedom of speech.

It always surprises me when lefties/liberals attack freedom of speech.

Being physically attacked for stating your beliefs is never okay, but speaking as a left-leaning feminist, I believe if someone is spouting hateful shit, they had better be prepared to get an earful about it.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean that someone can say whatever dunderheaded thing comes into their head and that everyone has to sit by and smile and not say anything. A person has the right to say whatever vile, disgusting, racist, homophobic, sexist thing they want. But I have the right to tell them that they're an leprechaun, and that they're wrong.

Edit: Wanted to add too that freedom of speech doesn't apply everywhere. If you're in someone's home, or on a website where there have been rules put into place against certain kinds of speech, or just saying something the owner isn't okay with, the owner has a right to enforce those rules and kick a person out if need be.
Example: I used a naughty word in my post, and it got replaced by 'leprechaun'. I can't complain that my freedom of speech is being trampled, because I agreed to the rules of this website when I signed up. I don't like it, I can leave.

Yeah obviously. I made it quite clear that I was a lefty and only there for freedom of speech and turned up wearing a liberty (uk freedom of speech group) tshirt. I am just saying I have encountered a lot of lefties attacking freedom of speech even though i'm a lefty myself
