In elementary schools, students use kanji drill books which require them to write the kanjis in an exemplary compound about 10 times, and this activity is supplemented by the class reading aloud several passages together during "kokugo class" to get used to the readings. They are also taught that one "half" of the kanji represents its meaning, and the other "half" gives a clue to its reading.

They can get penty of 'advanced' reading if they feel like it, too.
