Beginning to encounter words outside core6K

#1
Just wondering what others do with vocab they encounter outside core6k? I'm beginning to come across them.. I already have relevant decks for most topics in Japanese (kanji, grammar, names, locations etc) but nothing for just extra vocab. Do you guys just add those words in the same format as core6K (perhaps to the same 6k deck even?)?

Just trying to be "future-proof" Tongue Otherwise I'll just add them into a new deck any old way.

pmnox did a lovely deck up to 10k, perhaps you could try that? Otherwise, I'd say, just add them to the end of your core6k deck...

I even have an extra deck that contains extra 15k words after Core 2k/6k/10k. So basically, it's like having 25k deck (10k + 15k).

Ohh wow, nice stuff. It looks like you are still optimizing that last one? How do I handle the migration from core2k6k to this new mega deck (I would lose my current deck progress would I not)? And to be clear, do I start with core10k https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/702754122 before moving onto the 15k supplement (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1132075078)? Or will you merge both?

I know there must be some other threads on this, but if someone could fill me in quickly that would be great!

KanjiMood Wrote:Mine core10k deck is divided into 0-6k range (the same as core2k6k) and (6k-10k range, extra cards). You will not loose your progress if you import my deck, you can also undo the operation if needed. You can simply delete first 6k cards from my deck and then just study the remaining ones.

I want to keep both decks separated, because those decks are made differently.

I have on my computer updated versions of both decks. I want to make a few small changes, before I release the updated versions.

Ah, OK makes sense. What would be a good way to migrate from a 6K-only deck to 10K? Just suspend all 6K words on 10K deck? Or just go through them all again?

Yes, just suspend cards with ids between 1 and 6000.

I have an updated version on my computer. I'm going to publish it within next 2-3 days. I want to make sure that everything works fine, before I release it to public.

Interesting.. looking forward to it.

Does your media match the ones in core2k6k optimised? Or will it use another set of media? Anki must have serious servers to store all this stuff for free for everyone, wonder how long it will last Tongue

Enjoy them?

pmnox has a pretty awesome 10k Anki deck. Past that point, unless you are really interested in the word/phrase... well, yeah, I don't know. What is the cut off from whence memorizing vocab in Anki becomes less overall beneficial than simply reading a lot?

Being exposed to the existence of a word in Anki is a really useful means to become familiar so you can be aware of it while enjoying native media. Unless you add a large amount of example sentences with different contexts, you don't really get much of an understanding of the word with vocab cramming, aside 1:1 terms like concrete objects.

EDIT: In my opinion, that is.

Yeah, I agree to an extent. 10K is probably more useful than the supplement, I guess. Though it may be useful if you take a break from Japanese or learn a new language or something, knowing you have a record of all those words somewhere..

If I were you I would only make an extra effort to study certain types of new vocab that you happen to come across(via Anki or however you like):

-Words that are in a field you're interested in
For example, if you were a guitarist words like "fret" "string" "bend"
-Words that you realized, after you look them up, that you've already looked them up one or more times in the past
-Words that you find interesting, funny, or cool
-Words that you can immediately imagine being very useful

I'm planning to finishing learning from the 10K using the same method I used for 6k.
I use the supplement just to mark words that I've read that way I don't have to create new cards myself for each new word that I learn outside Core 10k. So far I was able to find almost every word that I've encountered withing either Core 10k or the supplement.

Also, words that you had trouble looking up because you couldn't guess the reading. Murphy's law says you will see them again if you don't memorize them.

Yep good ideas all around, thanks guys. Adding it by interest after 10K is definitely the way to go. I know what you mean by just enjoying them, words seem so easy after the 1K mark, though I still can't read much beyond core6k sentences, it will come...

Use Rikaisama or Yomichan to add words if you see them on a website or a book in txt format. They will add the enclosing sentences as well. Just click on the word and everything is done for you. I have an additional deck of about 6500 words created this way. The words will add up really fast so you will have plenty to choose from.
