Digitalization of Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic

#1
Hi everybody!
I am interested in creating an excel file from the data compendium of Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic.
The reason is simply to make it easier to look words up, improving the somewhat small and thick printing of the dictionary.
I am about to start to learn to type Arabic, as soon as I find enough time, using some typing tutor software, so I cannot tell how much my typing speed would achieve in X time.

Once again, my idea is, as a beginner learner of Arabic, not only to mend the issues I complain above, but also to be able to add to the entries your own notes -examples of use, variations across dialects, pronunciation etc.

At no time do I intend to violate any rights; just a collective work for personal use, without distributing the whole of it.

The more people to share out the work, the easier for everyone to exchange their parts.

Thanks in advance!

Hi!
First of all, thanks for replying. I am afraid that it does not solve the issue of accessing to it quickly enough, as it's mere scanned pages. What I intend to do is some work as the one done with DoJG on this site.
I want to repeat that at no time do I intend to infringe copyrights.

Hope to hear news soon.

Hi dtcamero!
I am learning Japanese also; actually I've spent 2 weeks reading every post in this forum, and I know your one of the most active users.
Now, while you're at it, I think that this

is definitely possible nowadays, and in as many languages as possible.

We only need to do one thing: explain why; If only 10 per cent of the most active and knowledgeable learners spread in every blog, forum, site, college etc the idea of what learning a language really is, everybody would understand why such project is more than an exponential improvement, and consequently could be able to do their bit -the demand, as happened to Wikipedia, will do the rest.

Now you just got me envisioning you in a 2 week long cocaine binge with no sleep working through 7 years of forum backlog night and day.. haha

Why come here to discuss an a project for arabic tho? I know language learners tend to have multiple languages of interest, but the middle east is a long way from Japan. Its a bit of a stretch.

Also, it might be hard to drum up interest for this project. It seems like, in general, work that gets done on big dictionary projects and such tends to be a one-time deal and updates are rare. Once the initial work is done, everyone will just settle for what they get. The average language learner is too busy actually learning the language to worry too much about the tools.

It's like one of those things which could be taken as either a compliment or an insult.(笑) He probably meant it in a good way though.

my bad

best of luck

A long while ago I created my own anki decks off native sources a while ago, but I've lost a lot of the data. I didn't get far, i probably got to half of the grade-1 book. Ive you're interested I can get you the books. I've got 1-6 graded native material from Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Raw PDF files etc.
