Transitioning to RTH after RTK1

#1
Hi guys, I've been a lurker here for pretty long and this is my first time posting! (I hope this is the right section to post in)

I've just reached 1800 on RTK1 - and have made the decision to study mandarin first before Japanese.(due to certain personal reasons, which I would elaborate for if anybody is interested Smile

I've been reading up about transitioning from RTK to RTH1&2 - this post (and the spreadsheet of gdaxemn) has been a great help

http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=9657

Based on the numbers and spreadsheet gdaxeman provided, here's my plan upon finishing RTK1. I would appreciate any comments/proposals on whether I'm going in the right direction or otherwise.

Plan :
1) Finish RTK1
2) Create new deck with only the RTK1 characters/keywords that match with those in RTH 1+2 (about 1589)
3) Look up which characters in RTK3 overlap with those in RTH1/2 (about 500), and study them using kanji.koohii (Why not study directly from the reviewingthehanzi site? Because kanji.koohii has a better variety of stories to choose from)
*At this point, I have about 2000 characters studied from RTH1/2. Since there are about 3000 in RTH1/2, I would have to learn the remaining 1000 characters in RTH1/2
4) Learn remaining 1000 new characters in RTH1/2.
5) Start vocabulary studying.

What do you guys think? Feedback will be greatly appreciated!

I was thinking if I ever made the switch like you, I'd study readings at the same time and keep vocab on the cards for reference. For one, if you're adding a new deck for this, you're going to have to mature 1600 cards that you should already know. That sounds like a lot of extra work. By adding in the readings, that's a novel element to your cards and its not all just backtracking. Besides, they are much more consistent in chinese so it seems much more worthwhile. You can also keep vocab on your cards for reference, maybe not trying to produce them, but just to give you a better sense of the keyword.

Also, are you going off RTK = traditional, or RTK = simplified? It seems like RTK might stick a little closer to traditional forms, but I'm not sure.

A while back I thought up a plan where I'd study the traditional forms in recognition mode like: Traditional -> RTK keyword (or RTH if it isn't present in RTK), reading, simplified form. It seems like the simplified form would be readily derived from the traditional form as long as you get used to how its done. But I'm not sure. I haven't acted on any of this, and don't plan to for a while. Don't have the time for it.
