As a follow-up from another thread (and to stop it from becoming even more offtopic), here is a nice little space (provided mods are okay with it) to express ourselves, and our Japanese, verbally. Two users have already taken the plunge and the waters are nice and warm:

@uisukii: I decided to record a reply just for you (lol).

@arupan: Hi~ I thought I'd reply to you. I hate my own voice in English let alone Japanese but enjoy lol. Watch out - volume might be a bit loud!

p.s. jealous of your accent/pronunciation x)

Ash_S: I thought the same about your accent lol. And I thought I'd reply back too:

I wonder how Benny (remember him?) is getting along. Its been a week since he did his Hiragana reading, I wonder how he has progressed since then.
Yeah, it would be nice to see his progress. I hadn't heard of him until I saw this thread but it sounds like fun.

P.S. (another suggestion): Maybe a mod should create a new topic and move all these audio posts there instead?
A few words? A handful of thoughts you want to get off your chest? Your favourite verse, or selection of prose? An advertisement which refuses to leave your head? Something odd and unexpected someone said to you on the train? A joke? A famous movie line? If you have the time, the motivation (and/or confidence), drop a line and someone might just respond in kind.

Yeah I thought this was a good idea for a thread! Thanks for going ahead and making it. It'll be cool if we get some people participating and we can put some voices to the names Big Grin
p.s. I can't access arupans posts on soundcloud now T_T

Tried to record and upload something today. Have essentially no speaking practice, outside of pronouncing core vocabulary flash cards, so it would be a nice example of what Benny recorded, minus the audio, length, and finding a language partner to bounce around suggestions. I'll try again in the morning

A story about my second time trying to talk to a Japanese person, a.k.a. why I can't speak the language for the life of me.

Arupan Wrote:Sorry, I made them both private cause I thought you already heard it. Having a recording of yourself speaking a foreign language is kind of embarrassing, so I'll make them private again after some time has passed. I'll probably do the same with the next ones (if someone decides to actually participate) as well ^^;

EDIT:
Added another comment
I made you a reply~ Watch out for volume again!

By the way I totally agree about it being kinda embarrassing. I'll probs set my recordings to private at some point too^^;

@Zgarbas: Haha, I can completely relate to that story having done the exact same thing with French a exchange student at my old school xD

Is there room in this thread for suggestions/advice from those that feel comfortable speaking in Japanese to those who aren't quite there yet...

I've been living in Japan for just over a year now. Had an OK base before arriving: Did RTK a few years back and went through Core6k, finishing a few months before getting here. Have probably around N2 grammar and other bits and pieces beyond that floating around. Read manga/easy news like "NHK news easy" with ease. Proper novels/newspapers are doable but still slow and I kind of avoid them... :/

I work as an ALT on the JET programme and am listening to Japanese all the time. My listening comprehension has improved leaps and bounds, but I still suck at speaking freely. To the point that occasionally people think I don't know understand ANY Japanese at all.

I've got marginally better at speaking over the past year. And I can "perform" fairly well responding to all the standard questions you get asked by everyone. But speaking is still embarrassingly bad compared to reading/listening ability. I just can't seem to make that jump into being able to express myself freely in Japanese.

Admittedly I live here with my wife, and home-time is mostly an English bubble. And I've barely done any "formal" study in the last year. And I don't actively speak Japanese much because I'm embarrassed about sucking still..

That said, any hot tips would be appreciated! (Even just telling me what I already know, like, just flipping speak Japanese more, stupid. Even if it's not perfect.)

I hardly spoke a word for two and a half years from beginning my studies. I was reading Murakami Haruki novels but couldn't hold a simple conversation...
And then I was a student in Japan and kind of had to dive in. I suggest putting yourself in situations where you simply won't be understood unless you're speaking in Japanese. Admittedly terrifying but great for progress!

If all else fails.. Big Grin

This can possibly be arranged...

Smile

I'm going to sticky this topic. Its a great idea, hopefully more people will participate. I might come up with some scripted dialogue to practice. I need to achieve drdunlap's mastery!!

I say many things. Many of them I say considerably bluntly. I have realized this. It probably has something to do with Osaka. 何卒お許しをm(__)m
