Another thing about kanji is that many people forget low-level frequency kanji readings all the time (and that's just reading it, writing it from memory is a different story). That just doesn't happen in English. Maybe the closest we get is forgetting the spelling of a word.

I think a lot of people who read a lot have quite a few words that they don't know how to pronounce properly in English, I think that's a better analogy...
