Core 10k - optimized i+1 version

These decks are really helpful, thanks

I'm using Japanese version of Anki. I'll have to reinstall it just to make this guide.
for future reference:
In documents/anki you may delete "prefs.db", restart anki and select desired language.

Thanks, I used this method a few days ago.

Btw, I checked which words are on JLPT1/2, but not in the Core 10k deck.
For JLPT 2 you would need to learn about 650 more words, for JLPT 1 about 1650(+1000) total. Some of them are just cards with different way of writing Japanese words, for example 入り口 and 入口, 風呂 and お風呂, etc.

EDIT:
Tanuki-Ultima contains only 200 of those 1650 words.
Out of those 1650 words 1280 words have at least one kanji.

I just released new version here is the changelog:

v15:
-- Added new column "Notes-Kanjified-vocab" that contains kanjified version of each word. I'm updating this field as I progress through Core 6k deck.
-- Added new column "wordstructure" that shows how word is made. For example: 車ー1k 自動車-3k 追い越す-1kh1kh コーヒー - KA. I use this column as a hint while doing the production deck.
- Creation time of each card was reset. Cards should now appear in correct order after importing deck.
v14:
-- updated description

When does one start studying the Core10K? After Core2K and Core6K? Can I just start with Core10K at the beginning?

Yes. You can start at the beginning. First 2k cards of Core 10k are the same as Core 2k. First 6k cards are the same as Core 6k.

pmnox, I've been having the same problem for a while now. Basically, when trying to import your deck (had to remove it due to a database corruption it caused, not sure why) anki fails to respond, and I have to force quit it after a while.

Not sure if it's been brought up yet, but wouldn't it be a nice option to have the related media in different down loadable folders? It seems to make sense that instead of having a massive deck to import, etc. that the media be separate, and accessed via the media folder in Anki?

That way one can simply place the images and/or audio into the media folder, and import a deck which would be maybe a few MB, if that. For example, nukemarine's Optimized Core 2k/6k Japanese Vocabulary has media hosted at mediafire, so people can choose to download and use which they want.

Or maybe a spreadsheet on google doc, or something, so people can manually import the deck from a spreadsheet?

Sorry if it's been brought up/addressed already.

Hmm. I'm traveling right now. Next time I'll post a link to media file to a version that doesn't have media included.

Here are txt files that I use to store copy of this deck:
Core6k:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ewmrvx4mf0tiqe...base13.txt
Core10k-Core6k:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/twn60q37j8r6ua...base11.txt

I'm going to have access to my pc next week. In next version I'll include some way of downloading deck without downloading media.

Better in what sense? As long as the data is the same I'm happy.

The new ones were generated using Bing Search. They have size of about 400x400 pixels. The old ones were generated using yahoo images that has pictures of abou 150x150.

Note that images in range 2k-6k were generated with Bing. The ones in 6k-10k were genetated with Yahoo Images.

The data will be the same. Although, I'm going to add one column with additional 5-10 examples generated by search engine.

Ohhh, I see what you mean.

In my own case that's fine, I'm not using the Anki deck (so no media at all), I just took your txt and put it into a spreadsheet. I'll go through it myself adding the sentences I want into my own deck on the way through, its just very helpful having another resource of 'word/example sentence' that I can go through and make sure I know all of =)

Thanks and good luck with your project.

I'm using the japanese core 2000 right know, are the words in the core 2k present in the 6/10k deck?

And second question: Is it possible to divide this deck into ten or 20 decks, so it's more easy to download and manage?

Yes. The first 2000 words in core 6k/10k deck are from core 2k.

Yes, it is possible. Anki has a feature that allows you to move cards to a different deck. http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html

Just out of curiosity how are you guys utilizing production and recognition cards in this deck? I'm kind of unsure what role production cards play in my deck right now.. I want to do production cards but I know the reviews will skyrocket. anyways thanks for the input!

Maybe I should check how many new words it contains.

EDIT: It contains about 3000 words that are not in core2k/6k/10k
Are there still plans to do anything with the extra Tanuki words? It looks like a good supplement for those coming out of Core 10k.

I personally use only the production cards. However, I think that most people on this forum use the recognition cards. It is just a matter of personal preference.

I'm planning to use production cards for the first 6k cards. Later I'll learn study cards with recognition only.

Maybe It would be better to start with recognition cards. I don't know. The only advantage that I see is that reviews would take less time. It takes me about 15s to review one card in production mode.

I decided to release them in a separate deck, because format of those cards is different than the one from Core 2k/6k/10k. I included a filtered version of Tanuki-Ultima as well as filtered version of CorePlus.

I'm going to post V17 today or tomorrow.
It will contain completely new images for cards in range 6k-10k.
I also added examples for each card taken from tangorin dictionary.

I'm in the middle of uploading image/audio files. I'll try to release a light version of the deck not containing images sometime today.

Sorry if this was answered already.

But is there any other differences between this and Nukemarines deck besides the added 4000 words?

Yes. His deck is based on the original Core 2k/6k from smart.fm. Mine is based on updated core-6000.txt deck from iKnow.it. They made a lot of fixes to the original deck.

Besides that I generated pictures for cards in range 2k-6k, added more examples, Japanese pitch accent, a few other columns.

However, the main reason why I made this deck was because I wanted to study production cards instead of just recognition cards. That's why I focused on making them in the way that are comfortable for me.
