Confused about RTK 1.

#1
Hello everyone I've been doing RTK 1 for about 2-3 days now and i've managed to reach 250 Kanji so far, the method is really good and I am enjoying the majority of the stories and I have a decent rate of remembering them.

However, there is one thing that I don't seem to understand, in the Kanji for Speciality or Dr. the story basically says 10 rice fields stuck together, meanwhile now in the Kanji for Wash which has Water and before, the book says that we're not using such rationalisations.

Am I missing something here or is this just a contradiction ? Just wondering in-case the way i'm studying this book has been wrong so I can start all over again in a more accurate manner.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have my book in front of me (I lent it out) but I'm pretty sure specialty is part of doctor and not the same.

Sorry what I meant is in cases like Speciality or Dr. the way the story is presented is Speciality : 10 rice fields stuck together making it a speciality (with a story).
Dr: Speciality + needle making it a Dr. (with a story)

Meanwhile
Wash: Water + Before, no we're not using that method guys we're using a washed out superhero that is always sanitized by water.

A fact you will become well acquainted with is having to come up with memory gimmicks above and beyond what Heisig provides. It's not as bad as it sounds, it usually winds up being pretty fun, especially with humorous stories provided here. Note for example that the stroke order for specialty--and therefore Dr. and all others like it--is different from that of rice field (it's more like stick, sun, walking stick). Already we have a discrepancy, and it's better to either come up with a story that reflects stroke order, or just hope it sets in.

More to your question: I went and read the frames of both that you mentioned, and you're probably right that he contradicts himself. I found numerous mistakes in the 6th edition. ("Purple" was listed as number "13751475" Tongue). My advice is just don't worry about it. Go with the flow. Use his stories that work for you, and choose your own for those that don't. Once you go farther in you'll have no choice but to make it all up as you go, and many people here change his primitive suggestions altogether.

Best of luck!

Yeah, was just worried because the method is working so well so didn't want to mess up or basically create a bad habit that will come back to bite me in ass later on in the future.

This stroke order story seems pretty good might give it a try, since some characters were a bit difficult even when am trying to make my own story.

Thanks a lot, gonna go back to work now (still have 30 more kanjis and 30 anki cards to review Tongue)

Agreed. There are a few warnings if I remember correctly, none of which are worth paying attention to.

If it helps, in previous editions, the story was about a Charlie Brown character, who had a little cloud of dirt always going "before" him, and "water" being used to clean him off or something to that effect.
