Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts)

500mb for just the core media files sounds about right. My entire anki app including including media and a few other large decks is ~900mb. But I agree with hyvel, anki syncs only what is in the media folder so as long as yours is 500mb you shouldn't have any surprises.

I downloaded Anki on my laptop to study on the go but I noticed that it was auto suspending/leeching cards I was reviewing. I didn't change the setting or anything, it's all default. Any ideas on what to do?

Are you sure? That shouldn't happen. The only thing I can think of is set the leech threshold to something high like 100 and see if the behavior persists. If that works, maybe setting it back to 7 will reset something. Otherwise I'm stumped.

The leech is set to 8. I noticed because I checked the graphs and statistics while reviewing a deck and it said 1 card suspended/leeched. I thought that was weird but continued and then the next deck had like over 60.

I got back home and checked anki on my computer and it says there are buried cards in certain decks. I was given the option to unbury them so I did which seems to have worked but I don't know why it happened in the first place.

When you study a card, Anki automatically buries its siblings (=other cards of the same note). You can disable this behavior in deck options: uncheck Bury related new cards (reviews) until the next day on the New Cards and Reviews tabs.

I think I tried that when I saw the cards were buried but they didn't become unburied after I unchecked that box. That's why I assumed it didn't work but I'll try it.

I'm not sure if this question is technical or not, if that's the case delete this post, please.

I'm adding images in the question/answer field (the field type is basic without any code) but the image displayed on the actual card is smaller than the original one.
The problem is that the information is written in the image and I cannot read it (it's a rather large picture with a lot of text).

How can I keep the same size in Anki, too?

Quote:One other thing to note is that Anki shrinks images to fit the screen by default. You can change this by adding the following to the bottom of your styling section:

img { max-width: none; max-height: none; }

I've been reviewing Core 10k for a while (no added new cards) and my mature correct is 79.39%. But I feel like there's a few hundred cards that just won't stick, and that sometimes cards are scheduled too far ahead that I forget them by the time they show up again. After reading the documentation and related threads, here's what I plan on doing.
Reduce starting ease from 250 to 150. Leave Interval modifier at 100% for normal. I very rarely use easy.
Tag leeches after 3 fails - review these after normal reviews are done.
Before I go to bed, review all failed cards again from that day using Custom Study.

So I'm curious if other people have messed with the starting ease and interval modifier, and how that impacted their reviews.

But changing the starting ease won't do anything to the cards you're already reviewing?

It works (of course)

Thanks a lot Vempele

I think that's a pretty good plan. Although just tagging leeches keeps the leeches in play. The creators of supermemo state that suspending 10% of the most difficult material makes for a 300% increase in the amount of material you can learn in the same timeframe. So I would find a way to suspend anything that lapses over 7 or 8 times. You can do that in the browser but sorting by lapses and suspending.

One question - are you doing sentence cards? If not you may want to start adding sentence cards. I was having a hard time with vocabulary and as soon as I added sentence cards, but vocabulary retention got a lot better. Probably because there's 5 or 6 words per sentence so you're getting that much more exposure to the words and you see them in context.

Your idea about reviewing failed cards at the end of the day is a good one. I actually review failed cards from the past 2 days and it seems to help cementing most of the stubborn cards. However probably not rimmediately before bed when you're tired because there's evidence that memory formation is impaired by the melatonin produced by your body at night.

I've played with the interval modifier and it does strange things like hard or pass gives you the same new interval. It didn't seem to make my retention get any better so I set it back to 100.

I haven't played with the starting ease, but It seems like that should work as advertised. But as noted it won't do anything about the cards already in play.

Thanks. I was thinking of changing it mainly for the words that don't seem to stick, so I see them more often. But I've never messed with the leech function, so I'll just ID the ones that are troublesome and work on a better learning strategy for those.
I do have the sentences shown, but I don't like reading them because I'll occasionally get the answer just by reading the first few words shown, and not from the word being tested.

I mean separate sentence cards. After I started adding them, my success rate went from 85% to 93% and I was learning grammar as a bonus.

A while back, I changed my starting ease to match the average ease of the deck. All that changed was that the average is even higher now; Easy is pretty much my default answer. I think what I really need is a high starting ease coupled with much sharper penalties for failure. -20% is more than erased by two easy reviews (+15% each), and the next two (or more) reviews are inevitably going to be easy because of the reduced interval! I suspect the only cards that end up getting a reduced ease are the ones I consistently almost get wrong (and therefore usually answer Hard).

Relevant to image resizing: I just found an addon that adds a fullscreen option to Anki. My images were just slightly too large in that Anki added a scrollbar (and scrolled to the bottom, which is something I never want).

How do I force Anki Desktop to force to "upload" only and never download on sync.
I'm scared that when I accidentally hit the download button, my collection will be replaced.
I think ticking the "Force to sync on one direction" works but I have to check it every time.

Btw, where does Anki store your progress?

If that ever happens, you can restore from backup and try again. Anki will probably even create a backup just before syncing.

<Documents>/Anki/<user>/collection.anki2 and collection.anki2-journal (the latter file contains recent changes while Anki is running).

Thanks.

How do I do that? (Top-right image, where you can write on the screen.)

The coupon bond button, is it the equivalent of a marked card (if checked)?
And what does the arrow button do?

Just discovered this plugin (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1627628203) and I can see its potential in sentence mining, however I'm too lazy to mine my own sentences (I'll just append).

^I can see that someone has already used the add-on through as script (https://gist.github.com/dlip/163d429553bfc899d94f) he made as he describes on the add-on, I'd like to use it on the japcorePLUS deck.. how do I do that?
I'm not that familiar with programming btw.

Not sure if this is a small question or not, but I seem to have messed up my decks pretty substantially.

My main deck is a deck of Japanese sentences with a Japanese sentence on one side, and then the meaning and grammar/vocab notes in one field, and the reading in another field, on the other side of the card. I think this was the default Japanese flashcard template, and it uses the plugin to make the reading appear as furigana.

Last night I had the bright idea of creating a new Heisig deck from scratch, tied to Japanese keywords because I need to brush up on my kanji writing skills. So I created a new deck. When I did so, the default fields were the same as my main deck, so I renamed the three existing fields and added several others to fit all the information I needed for the Heisig deck (ie. japanese keyword, english keyword, kanji, story, stroke count, heisig number).

This morning I opened my main deck to find that the new fields have been applied to it, and now the reading does not show as furigana.

How do I restore the layout of my main deck without losing information?

EDIT: I seem to have managed to do this now by adding furigana in curly brackets to the card layout. Still wondering about the following though...

(And as a bonus, how do I create a new deck with a different layout to the main deck?)
EDIT: Solved this too now. Phew.

Slightly panicking right now because I have been using my main deck for several years now and I REALLY don't want to lose the sentences or the scheduling data, so any help or advice would be gratefully received. (I am also googling for solutions, but am slightly nervous about following any advice that isn't specifically related to this issue...)

Go through your backups (Documents/Anki/[Username]/backups) and keep restoring them until you find one from before this disaster. Then you can just redo the work of adding the new Heisig deck.

Export the new deck (as apkg) before restoring from backup, reimport it afterwards.

As far as I know, you cannot check your progress on the anki website. You can on the desktop program and the iOS app. I'm not sure what you mean by not realizing you are done with a deck. Theoretically you are never done with a deck because reviews will keep coming forever.
