Android app that can use Japanese dictionary to autocreate Anki cards?

#26
Hi - I wanted to add an update to this topic as I think I've found a better solution to automated card generation in Ankidroid. I hope this is useful to somenoe.

I tried the following Android Japanese dictionaries:

WWWJDIC - as recommended above - sure it has one-click card generation, but the dictionary itself is pretty poor. The main problems are that it has no result ranking, and no visual indication about which results are common words. So I often end up scrolling and scrolling to find the result I want.

AEDICT3 - can export a CSV to Google Drive, but no direct card generation.

JED - no longer in development, no longer works with Ankidroid.

gSho - can export direct to Ankidroid but resulting card needs a lot of editing. Also if you export several items at once they all get mashed together into one card.

Tangorin (app) - no export function yet (but possibly one to watch?).

Japanese - does export to Ankidroid, but the process is a little more convoluted, and cards not as well formatted as...

The winner:

Jsho - once-click card generation in Ankidroid, nicely formatted. Quick and simple.

So right now I'm using Jsho. Now it's not the best overall dictionary (has ads, requires manual switch between English / Japanese) but it does have the best export to Ankidroid. If one of the other, better dictionaries could improve their export function then I might switch.

Thanks for experimenting with the various Android dictionaries to find what you think is the best one when it comes to Ankidroid card generation. Since I don't think I'll have enough MBs to spare due to my monthly download limit, could you please show us the layout of Jsho's automatically generated Ankidroid card?

I am using WWWjdic so for example, if I search for 食べる and export to Ankidroid, by default it looks like this when I view the card in Ankidroid:

FRONT
食べる : 食べる(P); 喰べる(iK)

BACK
たべる (v1,vt) (1) to eat; (2) to live on (e.g. a salary); to live off; to subsist on

What does Jsho's 食べる card look like?

As someone who frequently adds new vocabulary to Ankidroid, searching using an online dictionary (such as WWWjdict) is getting very annoying. The seconds add up and it is very boring to wait. My dream app would have the following features:

1) A competent Japanese dictionary with English meanings (I don't subscribe to the J-J philosophy).
2) Quick offline searches and instantaneous (results pop up as you type similar to the now defunct JED).
3) Search by romaji, by Kanji or by English word (same as WWWjdict).

KANJI RECOGNITION
4) Instant Kanji lookup as you write, Kanji recognition integration.
5) Kanji recognition copy/paste: WWWjdict does copy and append-copy (copying the first written Kanji, and then appending the second Kanji so you have both Kanji copied in that order) pretty well but I wonder if it can be done even better/more efficiently.
6) Writing a multi-Kanji word without stopping, and then copying or looking up the typed word immediately after writing it. As mentioned above, WWWjdict is decent at singular Kanji, but if you want to write and search for words that have 4 Kanji or more, it's pretty slow going (write Kanji, copy, write second Kanji, append copy, write third Kanji etc). Improvements can be made here short of using a completely different Kanji-writing app.

Jsho exports 食べる as follows:

FRONT
食べる

BACK
たべる
1. to eat
2. to live on (e.g. a salary); to live off; to subsist on

So... all the same information, formatted without the bracketed information e.g. (P), and broken over several lines. I prefer this layout. But as I said before - the app has some other shortcomings.

It's the same dictionary so I might as well stick with wwwJdict

Also, Wwwjdict needs a "new search" button on every screen. Right now I have to keep pressing back as well as deleting my search. Well too many button presses.

I might be missing something obvious here, but can someone tell me how to use WWWJDIC Android offline? Or does it only work if connected to the internet?

Is there a good alternative to jed that works offline and has done sharing capacity such as Anki create or export of lists? I'm on Android

There's only Aedict and JED... Oh and Jsho apparently, see above.

Though, you could ask developers of other apps to add that functionality: http://tangorin.com/forum/531/ (Tangorin)

Thanks. And thanks everyone else who wrote on this thread. I'll stop beating the dead horse that is jed. It seems jsho will suffice.
