This supplemement thing

#1
I am a bit confused by the whole supplement thing. Can someone let me have an up to date link to the supplement please? I can't find one that works. And reading around it seems some are in RTK3 which I really don't plan to do. So are there references to numbers on the system here so I can just add these cards to my stack? Or have I missed something. Any help much appreciated.

Basically because of Japanese legislation some kanji that once were considered rare and found in RTK3 were recently moved to RTK1 (even if their number in the system is still RTK3's while the admin updates the site). I think the answer you want is in this thread.

Brilliant - do I need to worry about new primitives at all?

Not really, I think even mortar 臼 is introduced in RTK1. And the only weird one on the list is interrogation 那, but for practical purposes the left side can be considered akin to katana 刀. I don't know anything about the order though, so the safest course would be to do the supplement once you've completed RTK1.

Again, thank you very much.

So the RTK1 order that includes the supplement is actually in the 6th edition, which is reflected in this spreadsheet (the kanji in yellow and amber):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?...idnc#gid=0

Learning them in order might be a little more beneficial than doing all of them in bulk at the end.

A previous thread about the RTK1 supplement: http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=5890

- The 1981 and 2010 jōyō lists include 1945 and 2136 kanji.
- The fifth and sixth editions of RTK1 include 2042 and 2200 kanji.
- The supplement includes 157 kanji.
- One error in the supplement is that 篭 (or 籠 if you use jōyō variants) was already included in the second edition of RTK3. So there are 22 (not 23) kanji that were not included in the second edition of RTK3.
- There is one jōyō kanji that is missing from the supplement (璽). It was added in the sixth edition though, and it is the one kanji left over from 2200 - 2042 - 157.
- One kanji (誰) has a different keyword in the supplement (who) and the sixth edition of RTK1 and the second edition of RTK3 (who?).

The supplement and the sixth edition use non-standard variants for at least these kanji:

RTK supplement and sixth edition variant;RTK supplement and sixth edition keyword;RTK sixth edition frame number;jōyō variant
嗅 where the right side is 臭;sniff;129;嗅
喻;metaphor;308;喩
篭;basket;1022;籠
隙 where the two upper strokes point upwards;chink;1393;隙

I have changed my kanji lists to use the jōyō variants. The RTK variants for "sniff", "metaphor", and "chink" are not even included in kanjidic2.xml.

There are many more characters where the jōyō list uses new standard variants (like the fonts that end with N) but RTK books use old standard variants.

New kanji in the sixth edition:

curl -s lri.me/japanese/kanji.txt | tail -n+2 | awk 'BEGIN{OFS=FS="\t"}($10>=2043||$10=="")&&$12!=""{print $1,$12,$13,$10,$11}' | sort -nk2 | tr \\t \;

Thank you. I had thought I'd nearly got there - just passed 2012. This supplement has depressed me a bit! But was a bit surprised that the kanji for dare/who was not in the original book so I know what I have to do . . .
