多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge

How is everyone going this round? It doesn't seem to be as popular on the app (maybe people are waiting for a full period).

If I am not too busy with work I reckon I can make my goal, or at least match last period. I had a pretty productive morning running through graded readers on Monday (bank holiday Smile ) I've ran out of graded readers, so back to NHK news and subs I guess.

Pretty good, especially considering the fact that I'm busy with moving. Luckily, almost all the serious tadoku-ers seem to be busy with various things, so yay for less competition Tongue. It's wwwaaaaay less competitive than the last half-round (in which 1300 was barely enough for #5). I hope I can keep my #3 spot Tongue.

The fall semester just started, but hopefully I can make my goal. The majority of my reading lately has been from Tales of Phantasia, but I should probably print out some more news to read, since I can't really enjoy an RPG in between classes.

I'm doing much better than the last round, but I'm still only in 49th.

Congrats! Big Grin
I went a bit on the lazy side, and still ranked #13, which I find very funny XD.

Distracted with family over the last weekend, but still managed to match my score last round with more focus on News/Books. I think with the addition of cb's awesome OCR Manga Reader I might try and complete a small manga next round Smile

I'm going to try 多読 this time! YAY (excited) Big Grin I just ordered a buttload of manga, so I should be totally set to go, provided the rest of it arrives here on time (I think it will).

I might drop off a bit at the end, though, to get ready for NaNoWriMo (T_T)

Okay now I just gotta figure out how to sign up and stuff, since I've never done this before .__.

edit: oh gee that was easy. XD

Double edit: Are there rules somewhere for scoring manga? Like, I assume you wouldn't count a single page with one giant キャアアアア as a page, but where do you draw the line exactly? Or do you just use your own judgement?

Pretty much use your own judgement. I personally am lazy and just count them regularly (besides, its 1/5 of a point).

返事をありがとうございました!
Yeah, it makes sense if things like that were already sort of factored into the point value anyway Smile I will use my good judgement though!

I don't actively do Tadoku but don't you just enter it tagged as being manga pages read and it automatically calculates it for you? Thought I saw that before.

Yeah you do! I was just wondering what sort of pages I should tally for that and if you were supposed to leave out pages with barely any text or not.

When I read manga for tadoku I counted all pages as equal. It evens out as some pages are full of text whilst others have just onomatopoeia.

For graded readers I use 'book' but typically count 2/3 pages as 1 'book' page. You get through less pages and they're worth a full point, so I felt like I had to adjust the count for these.

Registered just now, set myself 100 as a goal this time and will see what happens Smile

This is true. Especially those manga that have the occasional author's page that I never understand.
Do you folks count your anki reviews for which you read the whole example sentence as a sentence? I was curious what people mean when they include #sentences.
What about Listening-Reading (following in an audiobook)? I might just give myself a little bit less book pages for that because I can't stop to look up words. Not sure.
There're always variables, that's why I guess it's best to think of it as a motivator than something you need to be accurate. It's not like there's a cash prize for the top slot (right?!).

The rules for the contest can be found here.

It is made clear that SRS sentences don't count.

多読コンテストHQ Wrote:Do SRSed sentences count?
Text that has be entered into a Spaced Repetition System is not allowed to be counted for the contest due to the high repetition.
The tadoku bot also counts material differently if you are rereading it.

多読コンテストHQ Wrote:b. Submitting pages you re-read (repeats)
If you have previously something before but would still like to read it for the contest you must tell the bot how many times you have read the text. You receive half as many points for each read. So if this is your second time reading a book you would use the #second tag. Third time? #third etc (note: the repeats only go to #fifth) Example:
“@TadokuBot 80 #book #third”
This is my first time with the Tadoku contest but I've been carefully studying the rules. I want to be honest about my progress even though the contest is just for fun. Good luck everybody.

I guess you could use the 'Subs' setting and input the number of minutes. I assume that 'Subs' is meant for LRing JP subtitled films, drama, or anime.

Hmm, okay. I'll look into that subs thing. Ah, yes, the tadoku manual, I can't read that thing.
Somehow happy shiropan is nicer than a needle.

Well, that was a super fun first ever day of Tadoku for me ^_^ I made it through nearly an entire volume of 名探偵コナン! Now I'm on vol 5 Big Grin Only... 63 left to go! And then the other ones I haven't bought yet!

Congrats! I'd give you some competition for next month but I have so much manga I want to read before doing strictly novels. Sad

Looks like I'm gonna end up in 64th place or so. Well, I did a lot worse than I aimed to do, but I did read every single day, even if it was just one page of a manga, and I'm gonna keep up that habit from now on ^_^

I didn't realize there was a new Tadoku challenge, although I did sense it was about time. If anyone wants to join late, it's always worth it. Just give a modest estimate for how many pages you've already read since Jan 1.

I guess I could have just remembered this instead of depending on people to bump this thread when a new tadoku challenge is approaching: "The ReadMOD Tadoku contests runs during the months of January, April, July, and October."

It's started again! The March 15-31st Half-round! Is anyone else here participating or thinking of?
Reply
I'm sitting out this round, since I have a literature class. I wouldn't be able to be competitive and I'll end up reading anyway, so there's no reason for me to participate this time.

I'll be occupied reading Chaucer, but that will be fun in its own way.

Round 1: January 1st - 31st
Round 1.5: March 15th - 31st
Round 2: June 1st - 30th
Round 2.5: August 15th - 31st
Round 3: October 1st - 31st

The above is the current schedule. I try to keep it at the top of the blog to increase visibility. Would you mind telling me where you found the Jan,April July bit? I'll go ahead and delete it since its old and outdated.

VVV Thanks!

After a few bad rounds, I'd decided to take this one a bit more seriously. I've been spending way too much time in Anki and not enough time reading -- I guess it's time to how well that time was spent.
