I always thought 頑張る was to "keep at it, or persist"? Like if you're in the middle of something and you're getting tired, 頑張って would be said to encourage you.

I think the lesson here is that every word in any language has different meanings depending on the context. I think Magamo said that you should ask what to say in this situation, rather than asking how to say a word in a particular language

Magamo said something similar about translating.

I'm just aiming for ten pages a day this time around. Again I can't recall which forum member described not being able to finish a page without looking up every unknown/uncertain word, but that has become me recently; I just want to really know that I understood every sentence and somehow I am able to sustain interest/momentum despite this pace.
I'm reading 愛のむきだし・aka, Love Exposure. I recommend this book to anyone who liked the movie. Lots of Christian-related vocab, but once you get over that hurdle, the novel author and director is the same guy so the movie and book are REALLY similar, thus making comprehension really easy.

My time using Anki feels much more productive now that I'm mining vocab from the book as I read it. It took me way too long to get around to that when the solution was right before my eyes (i.e., Jsho app).

Might be joining you on that, I only have ~100 vocab cards now that Anki desktop decided to wipe my Core deck and backups I can restore a few weeks old collection from my phone, but I can't really see the point -- I'd have to redo thousands of other cards for the sake of a few hundred 'immature' vocab items.

Just going to have to take this as a chance to take a different approach (mining vocab). Just very annoyed at the moment!!! :mad::mad::mad:

It feels like the difference is that the vocab being mined is contextualized by the book you are reading; it is meaningful and relevant to something. You can picture the scene or situation that the word relates to, and all the words should generally have thematic (to the story) and idiomatic (to the author) relativity.

edit: Wow I'm one post away from 500. I will just say that time spent on this forum has not gone to waste. As evidenced by Rawtoast and my conversation above, taking the time to research and compare efficiency in study methods and share tips and files is better than going into language study blindly.

I'll be competing again for the first time in a while. Haven't been doing much reading lately so this seems like a good way to reawaken the habit.

I should be putting all my energy in June into looking for a job, but the way I figure you gotta have a bit of a challenge or something to keep you active regardless. Sending people resumes doesn't get me out of bed in the morning. May has been a complete waste because I forgot that...

Me before tadoku: Aaah, reading is めんどうくさい。I have so much reading to do but I get tired after a single page.
Me yesterday: Ok, Tadoku, we can do this *reads half of her academic book in one go*.

I love this contest.

Done, and I registered the pages I read yesterday -- I don't really trust the page count of it though, because I'm only able to read about 100 positions (out of about 6000) in an hour, and that's about 6-7 pages, but in the fourth Harry Potter book, I was able to read 200 positions (out of about 17600) in an hour, and that was about 13-14 pages in the paper version.

The former is a kindle-only book though, which I found on the American amazon with a 5-star rating (and seemengly well-rated on the JP-site too):

The fact that it is only available on Kindle might have caused the dodgy page count though.

EDIT: I actually enjoy reading, without Tadoku though, and read from about 500 to 1000+ pages in a month in German (primary target language) every month.

Shucks, I had too much free time yesterday and didn't start off well. Does anyone else find that they are most productive when they don't have time for the things they want to do?
