I haven't seen anything in the rules about it one way or another, but it seems to me that if you read them during the contest period and want to sign up and register your reading so far, there should be no objection.
Edit - oopsydoo - didn't see that you were already in. Ignore me!

1 week of zero responsibilities as of today! Perfect for tadoku reading! ٩(♡ε♡ )۶
2016-06-10, 12:58 am
13 manga pages. Not much but most I had a chance to read this week. Rank 50 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ How is everyone else doing? (I'm pretty sure no one is lower than I am atm...)
2016-06-10, 1:47 am
Just passed the 300 pages mark. However it's worse than it looks because I know I am going to lose around a week later in the month, so I ought to be doing better than this at present to get to my target - even my non-secret one!
Rank 50? No. 50 only has 6.6 pages altogether. That can't be you? Or am I misunderstanding?

Need to count my pages from web novels, so I'm not doing so hot right now. I don't even know how much I've read, I just know where I started...

Managing to cling in around the low teens. Almost at the halfway point of my personal goal, though, which is what really matters. Hopefully I get some good Tadoku time this weekend.

The initial rush has worn off, but that seems to go for the other people around me battling for 5th position. It's a battle I'm probably going to lose, unless I find another life-devouring manga to read, or forcibly make the effort to sit down and read beyond my daily set reading time (manga is just so effortless compared to novels, even easy novels...). I am reading something cool at the moment, but it's not something you just sit down and blaze through.
I am totally using Tadoku as a justification for procrastination though. Hopefully next week I'll get my shit together and drop down the ranks while getting something actually valuable done.

I'm not doing great so far ^_^;; This week I haven't felt much like reading, I want to do other things like play games and watch anime (I counted my j subs at least). I'm reading less now than I was leading up to the contest. And now I want to study vocab intensively instead of reading extensively. It's not over yet, though >_<

I'm enjoying the forcing function of Tadoku. I feel like I'm definitely reading at a much faster clip, and reading more, in order to maintain my pathetic ranking.
I'm also feeling that desire to study vocab more, though. Too many new words!!!

I guess I am studying vocabulary. I do look things up all the time and ankify them. (It is naughty Tadoku, but since it slows me down, not speeds me up, I don't think it is contest-cheating).
I am such a muddlehead that concepts like "studying vocabulary" and "reading extensively" don't really exist for me. I just bumble through my immersion doing what comes as it comes. I like the contest though, because it shifts the weight of my bumbling in the direction of reading novels for a month, and I think that is good for me - and I am reading some really interesting books.
I bought one because the cover looked cute, and it turns out to be really quite sad. All about a girl who died just before the book started and gets to spend a last week on earth, but in a different-looking body, so she meets all the people she knew, but none of them know it is her and all of them, of course, are dealing with her sudden death in their different ways...
Not the sort of book I would have chosen deliberately, but I just picked it up in Bookoff, because I liked the cover and it was about magic. Life throws interesting things one's way, doesn't it?

Yes, manga requires 5 pages to count as 1 Tadoku page and since it is my reading medium I have a long way ahead of me.
As for my Tadoku process, I try to do my best to do it in the purest form unless I cannot read the furigana on top (I read manga on my computer/tablet), then I use jisho to find the reading. I do end up looking at the meaning too but that's ok because it is my "cheat" that I don't do often
I also have the Let's Read Japanese series. I actually found this series while I was at a local Barnes and Noble (I go there often hehe) and bought it same day at Amazon (cheaper). Here is a preview of Level 1, Volume 1 . I'm sure if I juggle this into my Tadoku reading, my official page count will go up much faster than manga alone.
As everyone has stated, the contest has just begun so a lot can happen! 頑張って!
According to the Tadoku blog, you can count your pages via sentences:
So you can just copy/paste into a word processor and get the character count from there and then do the math. You might want to save the document too so that you don't accidentally count sentences/characters you already added in your Tadoku count. Or you can use Wired-Marker for Firefox to mark your place.

Quote:What counts as a net page?
For those of us reading Japanese finding out our page count from text is as easy as copying the text into word and dividing the word/character count by 400.

You can do a character count and see if that's fair for what you'e reading. I remember Shin-chan having like 200 characters per page so it's worth more than that for sure. A full page count is 400 characters so you can figure out how much you should be getting from that and turn it in appropriately.
EDIT: Didn't read your full post first but yeah make sure you're getting a fair amount.

I notice myself slowly slipping the rankings as we near the end of the work week, meaning working has had a deleterious impact on my Japanese reading. Obviously, the only rational thing to do is to quit my job.

You do have a point in regards to page counts. Manga is 0.2 ppp and I did the math with your example of 200 characters in 1 manga page example (200/400=0.5 ppp) and it seems to count for more than the manga count. I did a character count on one Shirokuma page (84/400 = 0.21) and it is about the same. Good tip on counting characters. Never know how much Tadoku pages I could have gotten if I didn't do otherwise.
[EDIT]As far as choosing the medium, should I stick to #manga or go the #sentence route? Based on the official count for manga, I concluded that that count (0.2 Tadoku page) is based on the assumption that a page contains 80 characters. What do you guys think? Til then I'll just tag them as manga pages in the meantime...

I think the words-per-page manga assumption is reasonable. Counting characters in manga would be hugely annoying because you can't easily automate it, and given some pages have less words than others and vice versa, I think it would ultimately balance out. And in any case, reading a page of manga is easier than reading a page of a book, so it doesn't bother me if it counts for less.
You're still reading a page of manga even if it just has a couple of sound effects on it, so that should quickly balance out any wall-of-text type pages. 0.2 points per page seems good enough taking that into account. Haven't actually done the math though.

Yeah, I copy everything into a text editor and run a character count. I don't have to worry about where I left off, because I read by chapter or article; it doesn't go into Tadoku until I finish.
Finally got to reading the essays/articles gathered by 社説比較くん and they take a very long time for me to read... There's some interesting stuff from recently about the announcement of the name for element 113(ニホニウム)and the recent incident with the Chinese and Russian naval ships near the 尖閣諸島.
I must confess my Tadoku sins; I can't avoid looking up words, especially on articles from 読売新聞, because many of those words just don't show up in fiction (that I've read) that often. I've also been analyzing them to find differences in the voices of the different articles, in preperation of the N1's reading section.
Still haven't counted pages; will probably do a whole batch in a day or so.
2016-06-11, 11:18 pm
Oh wow! Seems like you're reading some difficult stuff :0 As for the new element, I see it finally has a name...and it's very Japanese xD I wonder if I will have to learn about it in my upcoming General Chemistry 2 course in September. Apparently there have been other names according to wiki. All I can say is that I'm very glad that it's not ジャポニウム lol
I'm sure most people commit "Tadoku sin" of using a jisho. I try my best not to but in my case, the furigana on the manga I read is blurry so I am "compelled" to look up the word. Besides, ike Curedolly-san stated, it doesn't make us read faster but in fact slower so it's not like we're cheating in regards to reading speed and page count.

Looking up words is not a tadoku sin at all, I used the dictionary quite extensively when I first started out (and am using it a lot for my Spanish book now). It slows you down, so if anything it's tadoku on hard mode since you're tackling something that's above your level =)

I do think it's better to look up after finishing reading if possible though, unless it's a word that keeps showing up in the section you're on.
The point of extensive reading is to just suck down a vast quantity of language, so if you have to look up too much and it's slowing you down, it would probably be better to find something easier to read or you're not really getting the benefits of that. Intensive reading is fine and all, but it's not the point of this particular event...

This is why I am reading material that contains furigana for almost all the kanji. It allows me to not worry about kanji readings and just read! But I do still use a jisho for difficult to read kanji.
For example a word I had trouble while reading manga yesterday:
![[Image: RfLTRo3.png?1]](http://i.imgur.com/RfLTRo3.png?1)
No clue if it said ごふりさ or ごふりき or what. This is one of those instances where I check jisho. Good thing too because it actually resulted to : ごおりき--shaved ice machine(かき氷機). I knew what it meant due to the context (the shaved ice maker is the thing behind Panda) so I don't try to lookup for meaning purposes. I do that after the first reading/encounter during non Tadoku months.
