I know not all, but some.. Instead of correcting someone's mistake, they will as if like they were laughing at you, and was like "Oh man, you shouldn't be here. You're trying hard, you don't belong here." I tried this site to improve what I have learned, not to be mock by any good japanese pros here who had started to be like me before in the first place, seriously.貴様!

What?
... What? lol
If someone offended you, send them a private message or reply to them directly in the thread instead of creating a public indirect topic about it. It's no different from an indirect Facebook status.
Edit: Replying to posts written in English with Japanese isn't exactly suitable in this forum. Not everyone is going to be able to read it firstly since they are still using the website to learn Kanji. The 'What's this word/phrase?' thread is probably the only thread where it's suitable to write in Japanese and in situations where someone asks for a corrections on their Japanese.

I've also seen a couple of replies of that kind lately, and was surprised. People have always been rather nice and polite here, but some people forget not to be jerks to people starting to learn Japanese.
About writing in Japanese, I think banning the use of Japanese in a forum about Japanese is rather sad. If people want to write in Japanese and they think they find an appropriate thread to do so, I see no problem. If the problem is that some people can't yet read Japanese, then adding an English translation when you write in Japanese would be better, I think.
BTW, pauro02, your post has some mistakes and is somewhat hard to follow, and I think the use of "貴様" at the end sounds out of place, unless you want to sound like some kind of anime character on purpose.

If someone is replying to English posts in Japanese it causes trouble for others is all. Also if it results in corrections being made it can quite easily distract from the topic of a discussion when someone is asking for help on something, which is what I noticed in Pauro's previous posts.
Also, fretting about a minority of impolite people on this forum isn't constructive as such, it's the internet so it's to be expected regardless of website.

Yes, if you are bothered by a reply say so in the corresponding thread. Forum rules state "no animosity". Criticism is fine. It's better to (politely) settle something in the corresponding thread, than make generalizations.
Regarding writing in Japanese, since the website is for Japanese language learners of all skill levels, the default language here is english.
We used to have a "Japanese only thread" but it didn't really pick up. However if you'd like to practice Japanese, feel free to start a new "japanese only" thread in General Discussion, or maybe someone can find the old one?

貴様 is an insult isnt it ? maybe you have the wrong attitude. making a topic for the sole purpose of bitching about how people react to your enthusiasm. try to temper it. i heard japanese people especially dislike that sort of attitude.
2013-04-20, 6:47 pm
I can only assume you started this thread in responce to the "2 months before Tokyo" thread which I just read through. I remember being new to the language and always wanting to use everything I learned but unless you would be comfortable insulting someone openly (i.e. 貴様) or telling them to shut up (i.e. うるさいな。またく。) in English then you probably shouldn't in Japanese either. And if you write in Japanese and what you write is obviously wrong (spelling, grammar, ect), you really should expect people on a Japanese learning forum to correct you.
Personally, I think Japanese should be allowed but we should translate what we write (I'm guilty of that sometimes) especially in topics opened by beginners. As for thread derailment due to corrections, perhaps corrections should be pm (and then if the post was then edited all the better...nudge nudge).

Stupid question but... how does one go about sending a private message? Whenever I've tried to contact someone there has only been the "send email" link, of which I'm not sure if they have ever been received
due to not having any response.

Okay since noone else has said it, it seems very likely to me that pauro02 is basically just trolling and trying to wind everybody up. Pretty much all of his posts have been totally inane, have nothing to do with whatever thread he is actually posting in, and his "practice" involves writing complete incorrect nonsense when hes then unable to read any replies to it. Also any help and corrections he has been offered are completely ignored, such as writing にほんっご multiple times.
I'd say pauro02 needs to either use the forum properly, and practice his Japanese in the appropriate places to practice (and not in those where the OP himself says he can't read kana, for example), or disappear and go elsewhere.

I mostly agree with NightSky except I don't think its 'trolling'. I think he's young, impatient, and doesn't understand how confusing to beginners, annoying to those who know more, and distracting in general posting a bunch of incorrect Japanese all over the place can be.
After the responses in this thread however, he no longer has the excuse that he didn't know better.

Maybe a more constructive way to frame this in your mind would be this: part of learning a language, especially when it's your first foreign language, is learning when to use the language. There are situations and places on this forum where practicing your Japanese is appropriate, and there is also the opportunity to make new threads where you can practice your Japanese. But there are times when it's inappropriate.
As you get better at Japanese, and hopefully have chances to use Japanese in real life, you'll be presented with a whole lot of situations where you need to decide what language to use. There will (be
)situations where people around you vary in Japanese and English ability, where what language you use will be political (I once had a conversation with an old Korean man, ultimately in Japanese, who was forced to learn Japanese as a child under the occupation), where people want to use you to practice English, where people will assume you have a different ability level than you actually do, and so on. And you need to figure out what language is appropriate in those situations. So start now. It's part of learning Japanese.
If you want to just practice writing in Japanese, Lang-8 seems like a good place, and there are forums that use Japanese a lot more than this one (if I remember correctly, even the Tae Kim forum uses quite a bit more than we do here).
(Fixed the typo, haha)

Quote:stuffsMy advice would be to not ladder using English and find sources straight from your native language. Also, pay a bit more attention to nuances and rules. In both languages. Having a good command of English can be an advantage when it comes to using dictionaries and finding sources to help you out with Japanese. Don't let yourself get accustomed to basic mistakes. And learn to accept criticism when you make them. Also, don't extrapolate people's behaviors since it is a pretty bleak view on life which only feeds one's image as a victim, but if it's so extrapolated as to compare some users pointing out a mistake and giving polite suggestions to the man wanting to bring you down, no one can take it seriously and you end up sounding silly.

Also don't insult people, even if it's in a hilariously animesque manner. It's rude.

Okay I want to apologize for those people who shouldn't be involved, but its kind of tiring to pm those people who doesn't show sympathy for beginners. Sorry as well for what I've said which is written in kanji if you people misunderstood it, what I mean are those people involved, not all. By the way, I didn't generalized it (I know not all, but some). I've posted several times before this topic, and mostly I've got rude replies like for example instead of correcting my hiragana にほんっご, they were like "Nihonggo = interesting". Isn't it a bit rude in my part? Why not just tell me I was wrong and correct my mistakes. I know I have been trying to post in japanese a couple of times, but it so much obvious that I didn't know that much Japanese and was just trying to communicate using the language and was just expecting some corrections not some sort of being mocked.

I was hoping this topic would die but I guess not. Anyway, pauro, on April 15th Tzadeck corrected you "pauro02: It's にほんご" (on 2 months before Tokyo thread) You clearly saw his/her correction and proceeded to reply "皆、酷い。あなた達は日本じゃない、だからうるさいな。またく。" Then on April 19th you wrote "nihonggo no benkyou o benkyoushite kudasai" (on Best novels/books for beginners thread) which is where Stian simply quoted you, bolded nihonggo, and wrote "Interesting..." [not "Nihonggo = interesting"]. Stian's reply to you was not rude at all. If I was to classify anything as rude it would be your reply back to Stian "nihongo = 日本語 = にほんご= ニホンゴ happy?".
Long story short you had been corrected previously (at least twice) and as opposed to realizing your mistake, learning from it and moving on you have decided to play the victim, and as NightSky said, troll the boards. My advice to you pauro, is too close this window, study your Japanese, cool off and let go of your ego a bit. Everyone on the boards here has been a beginner and has been corrected thousands of times. The most sympathetic thing we can do for you is to correct you here rather than let you mess up when it matters. In the end what is important is to learn and move on.
As for apologizing to the people not involved, everyone on this site loves these forums and seeing someone write plain insults to others is not acceptable. It doesn't matter if we were the target of the insult or not. To that end, I would suggest you edit your posts where needed.
Now, can we please let this topic die?
